Has anyone ever had a lobster roll? Just curious, I'm assuming they're not

deep fried. Similar to a crab salad? I am looking over an online menu at a place we're going to next week.

No, no, not deep-fried, nooooooo! I love lobster rolls. Love. L-O-V-E. When I'm in Maine I am the

first one in line when the lobster shack opens in the morning. Then I have a lobster roll before lunch, I may well have a lobster roll FOR lunch, and I have been known to stop for a lobster roll after lunch. A pre-dinner lobster roll has also been appreciated.

Oh, yes, similar to crab salad. Best when the lobster is fresh. As in, was alive 15 minutes ago.

I make them frequently at home

using Louis Rich chunk Lobster or Crab Delights, or salad shrimp (when I don't have the "real thing"). This lobster salad is also great served atop a mixed green salad.

Lobster Rolls - adapted from Ina Garten
Makes 2-3 large sandwiches

1/2 pound cooked fresh lobster meat, diced
4 Tbs high quality mayonnaise
4 Tbs finely chopped celery
1 tsp chopped capers
(I have also added lemon juice, red pepper sauce and finely chopped green onions, red peppers, hard boiled eggs and/or fresh dill)
4 Tbs melted butter (or more)
2-3 good quality plain, white hot dog buns (for proper Boston-flavor!)
Lettuce leaves (endive, romaine, butter, leaf)

Chop the lobster chunks into bite sized pieces. Mix with mayo, celery and capers. Refrigerate.

Heat griddle. Dip tops and insides of hot dog buns in melted butter and grill until all sides are lightly browned.

Serve immediately! Top grilled buns with lettuce leaves and a mound of lobster salad - we serve open-faced.

for anyone in NY area, The Pearl Oyster Bar has AWESOME lobster rolls!!

On Block Island, they have a choice of the cold salad type of Lobster roll, or my new fave, the HOT BUTTER (no mayo) lobster roll. Eyes rolling better than Rachel Ray's right now!! smileys/wink.gif

I had one in Stonington, Maine and was sorely disappointed.

I had read up on them in Gourmet (probably the Stern's Road food) and knew they should be the following:

pure lobster meat
soft white hot dog bun
mayo

That's it.

And somehow I thought the simplicity of that sandwich would be what made it...well, simply perfect.

I was wrong.

The soft, white hotdog bun turned gluey in my mouth.
The thick spackling of mayo was cloying and overwhelming.
The lobster (scraped of mayo and devoid of bun) was tasty, but not perfect.

My first & last lobster roll...all in one fell swoop.
