I came across this link for bento boxes that are amazing.

I just love the creativity put into these. Further along there is an amazing giraffe made out of polenta and roast beef.

Dawn, Thanks so much for posting this! Always impressed by these. Any thoughts what was used

to create the smiley faces? They appeared a few times on carrots, rice, etc. At first I thought it was black sesame seeds, but what was used seems larger and more pliable.

Truly a work of love to make these.
Thanks again for posting.

Hi barb...

I have been looking at different blogs today re: bento, and as far as I can figure out, they are using nori (the kind for sushi) and the die-cut punches, like the ones used for scrapbooking. I just got back from a trip to Michael's where I purchased some $1 mini presses and miniature cookie cutters. I am going to have a little fun this week making some bento boxes for lunch. I also ordered some egg molds. You take a hot hard boiled egg, peel it, and place it in these little plastic three-dimentsional molds, one is a pig, a car, and two others, and submerge them in cold water. When the egg has cooled, you have an egg shaped like the mold you used. I know my husband is going to have me institutionalized...lol.

Please keep me posted on this...Would love to hear how the eggs turn out. I have the lil cutters

from michaels, and was never sure what to do with them...You have inspired me!
I loved the creativity presented on the slide show! Amazing how rice could look so fun! (I think there were shapes of flowers, etc)

Thanks again for posting!

Okay barb...

I went to Michael's yesterday and bought some mini Wilton cookie cutters, little punches, some little containers that resemble film containers only they are clear, and a mini muffin tin. Today when I made my son's lunch, I was fiddling around with cutting the sandwich, putting a little container filled with ranch dressing surrounded by vertical standing baby carrots and celery sticks, some pinwheels and a meringue (it is a four compartment tupperwear container that I bought at Target a few weeks ago for his lunch, and had never used it yet. My husband walked by and asked me, are you sure he won't get beat up for a lunch like that...lol. Then for a snack for the little ones today, I cut out some Halloween shapes out of cheese, and used the punches on a nori sheet to put on faces and such on the cut out shapes. The kids really liked them, and even my husband commented on how cute they were. This could easily become an obbsession, proceed carefully! The little punches worked great on the dry nori sheet.

here is a fantastic site for bento lunchbox fun - the Vegan Lunch Box

She doesn't post new lunches anymore since she wrote her cookbook, so browse the archives for tons of fun ideas for bento box lunches. She is Vegan, but you can adapt for non-vegan diets. some of the presentations are so clever and she gives links for ordering accessories and etc.

Dawn, thanks for the update! I will have to head to Michaels this weekend. I am not familiar with

the punches. Assuming they are similiar to the one's used for scrapbooking?
So glad it has been successful, (and your son was not beaten up! I am sure it will turn out that he will be the coolest and the envy of his friends!)

From the website, I also loved the creative idea of using cupcake liners to seperate food.

Thanks again for the update!

This is so bad...

I went to the Dollar General by my house and bought "bento" objects. Little cookie cutters, little plastic containers, the whole world is now a bento store for me to obsess with. lol. I want those little fish bottles too, but I am resisting.

Dawn, needed to tell you that I made grilled cheese sandwiches using my waffle iron

DH looked at me like I completely lost it. BUT, it was a huge hit!

I am amazed at the fascination with Hello Kitty on the links. The soy sauce containers look adorable!

Barb

I love finding dual purposes like that for kitchen appliances.

I have recently been using my rice cooker the same way. I was wondering if I could cook barley and other grains in it also, and found that you can also use it as an electric frypan of sorts. I have been making pilaf directly in the cooker. It's great because there isn't any extra clean up involved. You can make almost anything that you can on a stovetop in it. I just bought my rice cooker a couple months ago or so, and I just love it. Oh, and I just bought myself a green Hello Kitty little container that has a fork in it. There must be some subliminal messaging going on. I think grilled cheese sandwiches are on the menu for breakfast tomorrow!

I used my rice cooker to brown a rump roast for the crockpot...

it worked great. Browned it really nicely, didn't spatter on the stove top, and the non-stick bowl was easy to clean.
