Hi - I need some help coming up with food ideas for my bookclub Monday evening. The book is Sweetness in the Belly - based on the muslim community in Ethopia and then London, England.

We traditionally serve appetizers and a dessert.

Samosa's is all I really have so far. Thanks so much in advance.

A few ideas on this site

mainly mains but maybe you can adapt one, like the salad, to an app.

There's also this site: http://www.recipesource.com/ethnic/africa/ethiopian/

Ethiopian cuisine is similar to Middle Eastern--lentils, green beans, peppers, potatoes. You could make injera as an appetizer, but it's not that great on its own. Maybe served with one of the lentil dishes?

I've never heard of a specifically Ethiopian dessert, although isn't there something similar to baklava?

Maybe some green or jasmine tea with some English "biscuits", shortbread, etc.

I read that herbal tea is very popular in Ethiopia, like coffee is in the U.S.

Another thought

I don't remember specific foods in the book, but I do remember Lilly and her Ethiopian friends, in London, roasting their own coffee beans in foil plates over the gas burner. That could be fun to try, and you no doubt will need coffee for the evening ...
