After my candy marathon last week I gave my husband a container with cut pieces of the chocolate buttercream fudge to enjoy since it's his favorite of the candies I make. He sat it on his dresser in our bedroom to eat at night while watching TV. Last Saturday night he was in the shower in our room when our 3 yr old granddaughter, Keiley, discovered the fudge. When PaPa came out from his shower, she was sitting up in the bed, SMILING, with the blankets all around her. He said she was smiling soo big and was SO happy! And of course he was delighted to see her there - she's PaPa's girl! He went over and lifted the blankets to slide in beside her to have a "PaPa/Keiley talk". There, in her hands.... he saw that she was hiding half-eaten pieces of his fudge! She smiled great big and said...."I LIKE chocrate!!!"

Ever since, she's been talking about 'PaPa's chocrate!" We have so much fun with her.

I think I'll nickname her Meryl! smileys/smile.gif

Aw, that's so cute. You made my day, Gayle. A positive thought to take with me to the $%&(!#@#$(

dentist today. Am having two partial crowns done (already had 4 done). This had better be the end. It's a total PITA and I'm bankrupt! Send me positive vibes, everyone!

Don't even get me started on dental work...I know whereof you speak.

I've had several of those done this year. Glad to hear I'm not the only one going broke from dental work! All my old fillings are cracking and causing my molars to break (that, and my habit of clenching my teeth in my sleep).

I think they drug us so that we won't faint at the price when we pay...

Well,I'm back and I survived (but my pocketbook didn't). I clench my teeth also - real drag. We

are the reason these guys are rich!

I'm waiting for step 2 of an implant. might be looking for a second job, even with 2 insurances. ha

Not to get too personal - but do any of the "clenchers" use a night guard?

I have TMJ and a night guard has really helped me with that issue. You can buy them over the counter at drug stores or sporting goods stores - they run btwn $15-25.

I may be exagerating a tad with the second job, but yikes, it's costly and ins doesn't cover but

maybe half.

Yeah, I paid a lot of money for one from my dentist, custom-made - couldn't use it,

because I had a hard time swallowing (just normal saliva and some post nasal drip (sorry - this is sounding gross). The main reason is because I have a narrow jaw/mouth. Anyway, my dentist replaced it with a different type at no charge, and I couldn't use that one either. I don't have TMJ, but the night guard would definitely help with the clenching - unfortunately, I just can't use it.

They can be problematic - my mom needs one, but her jaw gets stuck open when she uses it!

I've had two custom made from my dentist; one fell out of my coat pocket @ O'Hare Airport, and the other one mysteriously disappeared off the face of the earth. :-0

I have TMJ and don't use a guard. One of my fears is that my jaw will get stuck open some day.

Luckily the TMJ is just annoying, not painful. To bring the discussion back to food, I have to stay away from really chewy breads and foods, otherwise my jaw just explodes when I chew.

No insurance here, either.

However, my dentist's office told me that insurance wouldn't likely cover the cost of crowns and such even if I had it.

Amanda - talking about chewy foods -

When I first got my mouth guard, I had to wear it 24/7. The dentist warned me about not removing it even while eating, so that would severely restrict my diet.

I was dying for a bagel one day, and actually ate it with the mouth guard in place....bad, bad girl!

We have dental insurance, but it essentially only covers cleanings.

We have partial coverage for basic fillings, and that's it.

No insurance here either but here's what we did.

My husband was in a serious car accident when he was a teenager and as a result incurred alot of damage to his teeth and every 10 years or so needs to have the dental work redone, a very expensive process especially when you don't have dental insurance. Through some friends we learned about a town in Mexico, Los Algodones, which has over 500 dentists and we heard they do fantastic work. Since DH needed over $10,000 of work (as quoted by our dentist at home) we thought we'd give it a go. Went in October and had part of the work done...crowns and root canals and saved over 70% from what our dentists at home wanted to charge. For instance, our dentist quoted $1150 per crown, we paid $250 in Los Algodones, and the quality is first-rate. We'll be going back again in the Spring to have more work done. Los Algodones is just across the border near Yuma, Arizona...you literally park your car at the border and walk across (as of January 2008 you'll need a passport for returning back across the border to the U.S). We saw hundreds, maybe thousands, of Americans doing this every single day the week we were there having the dental work done. It's a popular place to go, not only for affordable quality dental work but pharmacies too with amazingly low prices, compared to the U.S.

I hesitated to post this since it's getting away from recipes and food-related topics so if anyone would like additional information please feel free to send me a PM and I'll be happy to answer questions or provide further details.

Edited to add the link. We didn't use this service to book appointments, handled appointments ourselves, but the link provides answers to some FAQs about Algodones dentistry.
