I've seen messages about this posted here and have received several versions in my email to make sure I include cards to recovering servicemenbers on my Christmas list.
Apparently the government destroys all incoming mail that is sent to generic "servicemember" or "recovering servicemember"for security reasons. The attached link at SNOPES (it was on MyYahoo today) offers other resources and options for letting them know we are thinking of them and are grateful to them.
This site is full of great info for verifying chain emails and urban myths.
