Vegetarian friend visiting this weekend. What do you think about these 'meatballs'??

This is the recipe. Does anyone have any experience with vegetarian protein crumbles?

Vegetarian Meatballs

Ingredients:

One 12-ounce package of frozen precooked vegetarian protein crumbles thawed

Two eggs slightly beaten

¼ cup of Italian dry breadcrumbs

Two cloves of minced garlic

Two tablespoons grated parmesan cheese

Two tablespoons Italian herbs

½ teaspoon of crushed fennel seeds

Combine all the ingredients and mash using a fork. Form mixture into balls. Bake in pan in oven at 350 degrees for 10 minutes.

Add the vegetarian meatballs to sauce and use as a sub sandwich finger foods or to a pasta dish.

My honest opinion is that there are so many delicious vegetarian options in Italian cuisine,

that your friend won't miss an imitation meatball. I don't have any experience with vegetarian protein crumbles. They may be delicious but I'm not too hopeful. I admit I'm a little prejudiced regarding processed soy products

How about arancini--the fried rice balls with a cheese filling? Or a wonderful eggplant dish, or stuffed portabellos, or pasta Primavera?

Or falaffel--another non-meat ball that is delicious and even vegan.

I agree with Joe. I serve a multi-course Italian lunch every year that is vegetarian except for the

occasional cold fish dish or tuna stuffing. Grilled veges, marinated veges, frittatas (if your friend eats eggs), all kinds of veg/cheese pasta sauces, grilled polenta squares with mushroom or tomato sauce -- the delicious possibilities are endless.

If those crumbles are anything like Textured Vegetable Protein, I'm personally no fan.
