Cookie decorating event went well…

I invited a group home of mentally challenged adults to decorate cookies on their field trip to the library. Initially, I thought a group home of retirees would also join us but their holiday party ended up at the same time. So it was the 6 adults, their supervisor, a friend, myself and 6,396,208 jimmies.

It was a blast!

I had made goodie bags, bought holiday headbands (mine was a snowman), decorated the middle of the table with a huge wreath and dumped a spool of 75 outdoor lights in the middle. Then I set mini trays (small air-fryer trays 10/$2) at each seat to catch icing drips (and those damn jimmies) and that worked perfectly.

Initially expecting more adults, I had bought 4 premade cookie kits from Walmart (64 cookies, jimmies, 4 small tubes of colored icing), 3 full-size bottles of prepared Royal Icing (from Michaels) plus I made angel sugar cookies to use as their place markers. I used Sweetapolita’s Vanilla Sugar Cookie recipe and while it's good, my favorite cut-out is still Penny’s.

Off side, I had hot apple cider from our local orchard, more premade decorated cookies (from Walmart) and a bowl of candy kisses. Truthfully, it was an insulin attack waiting to happen and I should have been more aware of that. Fortunately their supervisor helped manage the situation.

Since we were using Royal icing, I took each cookie as it was finished and set it aside to bring home, dry and package. I’ll deliver these back to their home today. For privacy’s sake, I’m posting only their results:

PS: I had originally punched holes in the angel cookies to add hanging ribbon. After decorating them, I realized ribbon would cut through the halo. So I had to do emergency celestial facial surgery to fill in the hole.

Think of it as ecclesiastic rhinoplasty.

These folks are so fortunate to have you in their community! It's pretty clear that they enjoyed their own creativity.

What is a jimmie? Those little coloured balls??

Marg, a jimmie is a mini ball, a stamped pattern or sprinkles. I just finished bagging up yesterday's to put them away with GBH stuff. Then I'm going to boil my kitchen to get rid of all the sugar from GBH, caramel candy, caramel popcorn and these cookies. I feel like I should be eating kale with vinegar for the next month.

I want to see the headbands and centerpiece! A former coworker/friend has been working with mentally challenged young adults teaching them cooking at her church and I have been interested in doing some similar closer to my house. Just need to find a place to do it and a group to do it with. First I have to get mom's house cleaned out and sold ASAP so I can concentrate on things here rather than 400 miles away.

music-city-missy, I bought the headbands at Family Dollar store for $1.25 each.

I can’t show the centerpiece from the event (privacy), but here I’m testing out the idea the night before on my coffee table. I think it works.

…and here are their finished bags, each cookie in a ziplock bag and each person’s cookies in their own bag. I dropped them off this afternoon.

WOW! What an assemblage. (it's a word now, if it were not before). I love the centrepiece; such beautiful idea.

Also glad to know what jimmies are. And they look so nutritious.

Marilyn, I just love that you did this (and love you♥) - what a wonderful activity and I hope you don't mind me stealing the idea (I think I'm going to run to Walmart and see if I can snag some kits for my freezer). Our library has a monthly event for our adults that are *special*. I've donea flower arranging activity with them where I brought buckets of flowers and vases.

Deb, here are a few thoughts:

they had a hard time dealing with the little tubes of icing that came with the kit. The full-size 8 oz bottles of colored royal icing from Michael's were much easier to use. Also, at the last minute, I grabbed a dozen artist paint brushes (just because) and it turns out the adults used those more easily to move the icing around.

The little disposable trays were very helpful.

Some adults had difficulty figuring out how/what to color their cookies, so I cut out the examples on the box and set those by them. The boxed images were kinda ridiculous...the box says EASY LEVEL 1 cookie decorating, but the images were all swirls and specific designs...none used simply full color. Maybe that's why they only provide 4 little tubes of color.

Be sure to find out if any are diabetic. I didn't think to ask and the supervisor forgot to tell me. One woman was diabetic and I kept apologizing that she couldn't eat any of the candy in their goodie bags. She was so sweet and kept telling me it was no problem. So yesterday, before delivering their dried cookies, I stopped and filled a small gift bag with sugar-free candy and sugar-free cookies just for her.
