Just finished the Christmas cakes

Those are lovely, Lana! It looks like a Christmas decoration all by itself.

I'm right with you on never making fruit cakes again. I gave a mini one to my house contractor who gave it to his 75-year old mother who said it was the best fruit cake she's ever had in her entire life. I didn't have the heart to tell him the glacé cherries alone had cost $18. And I left out anything green or bitter so it didn't look like those Claxton fruit cake bricks.

BAM! (Broken Ankle Maria) tried Stella Park's version of Royal icing and liked it. It used powdered sugar without cornstarch. I found the sugar but haven't tried it yet.

Yes, the taste is much better than using meringue powder. Obviously a bit more involved, but the taste results were worth it to me.

Thanks, Marilyn! That recipe looks interesting - I was concerned that it was for flooding cookies, but then she said it worked for rosettes on a cake, so it should work. When I finally get around to making a cake again. As you say, the cost is unexpectedly high, if you use good ingredients.
