1 million lbs of ground beef recalled>>>

I find this really disturbing! Over here,

they just recalled tons of bread because it contained bits of glass! Apparently, a shipment of sun flower seeds fron China contained bits of glass that was used in bread.

Also, just a few weeks ago the authorities recalled locally made soft cheese because it contained the listeria bacteria.

I think it's scary that food bought in stores can be dangerous. Also, just a few weeks ago the inhabitants in Oslo had to stop using tap water because of too much bacteria in the water. Can you imagine the entire capitol starting living on bottled water overnight? It was such a mess, let me tell you.

I so agree with you Sylvia. The thing that really scares me is that...

many of the ingredients (or even components of the ingredients) listed on food labels are virtually untraceable, their origins thoroughly obscured.

I'm starting to think it's pretty much useless to check the food labels, if even the producers cannot tell you where their ingredients really come from. Just recently I had a real eye opener when the TV show "Marketplace" (CBC) did an investigation on what "a product of Canada" means (Title: Product of Canada, eh?).

More reasons to stay from processed foods...although there seem to be ever-mounting problems with fresh produce, as well. Sigh.

Contaminated drinking water is such a frightening thought. We had a bad incident here ...

in Canada about 6 years ago with e-coli contamination of a whole town's water supply. In Walkerton, Ontario, population of 5000, 2000 became ill, hundreds very seriously, with 7 dying. To make matters worse, the people in charge of the water supply knew of the contamination, but sat on the information until many people had fallen sick. Hurrah for deregulation!
