$10 worth of groceries =

2 apples

2 oranges

2 reg heads of garlic

1 bag of washed romaine

None were organic.

Total: $10.10...is it just me or did this seem like a lot if you were someone on a fixed income/etc. Of course mah brain may still be on 1970's time. I rarely go in for such few items, so guess I hadn't noticed. This was at the reg, not highend, not cheap grocery store, but 10 bucks for a couple of apples and oranges?

Ours sell oranges, apples, etc. by the piece in addition to a

bag. Garlic by the head or a tube.
I can always get out of TJ's for items like this than going to our regular large supermarkets. Too bad.
I will say we have Aldi's here and I could have gotten bags of oranges, etc. for less that you paid. ;o(

Do you all have chain supermarkets? I know i am often

surprised in Denver to see produce sold by weight instead of by the piece (particularly lettuce and melons!!) as it is here. Is that what is happening with these prices? Just curious.

Yes, they sell loose, but still was more expensive, like $2.39 ea, etc.

and the bag of apples were the smallest apples I'd ever seen. Toddler toy size, maybe 3 tiny bites worth tops. I almost bought them just to look at,

At the chain groceries here virtually all produce is sold loose, by weight. . . .

only places like Trader Joe's and Fresh and Easy sell packaged, pre-weighed.

This is one of the reasons that my friend and I are going to

put in a large garden at her house (nice and flat land). I want to be able to freeze and pickle vegetables for the winter next year. I think the same amount of groceries would have cost me under $5 or at least close to it.

There are lots of factors driving the cost of food up and up. If fuel prices stay low, it will...

...affect it in a positive way.

Drought has driven up the cost of everything grown in the ground or on the hoof. Feed grain is more expensive.

Etc.
