2 batches of cayenne nut brittle cooling. 3 pumpkin crumb cakes wrapped. Sound of Music playing

Aww, sounds wonderful...my weekend six, the BakeFest Marathon 2013 edition

Thanks - I didn't realize the Sound of Music was on - love that, except for the How Do You Solve a Problem like Maria part. Growing up friends parents use to burst into that song upon meeting me and it was weird/awkward.

Today I was so tired after a cup of tea/chat on the phone I fell back asleep till 4:30pm!

Yesterday was day 4 of BakeFest Marathon 2013 and the deadline for shipping, so it's ended (thank gawd). Friday night from 10pm-1:30am I iced/decorated the sugar cookies, so the worst was over. That's so fun when you do it with a group and such a PITA when you don't.

When I look at the list seems like not much for how long it's taken, but I have a single non-convection oven. However, I had cookies/etc everywhere. Thursday I had the oven on from 8am-9:30pm baking non-stop.

Completed - all double batches:

Iced Sugar Cookies with Almond Frosting
Thick & Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies
Vanilla Iced Cardamom and Cinnamon Spice Cookies
Chocolate Peanut-Butter Surprise Cookies
Candy Cane Oatmeal Crisps
Cinnamon Shortbread
Baker’s Chocolate Old-Fashioned Brownies
Divinity Candy without nuts

On the list, but ran out of time to make/ship:

Gayle's fudge (be gone candy fear!)
Cashew Macadamia Crunch candy
pomegranate jelly
Maple cream

I'm thinking of moving everything here to another day and ship those as new years gifts. That way I can also add another jam to the mix.

In the middle of this Friday hit up Big Lots for cookie tins - they were on sale, yay! And after going to 5 stores finally found holiday paper plates/napkins to add to mom's box so she can host guests for the dessert party in her room. ♥

Also, how out of shape must I be that I have sore muscles from baking/standing? Sheesh. This whole bedridden all summer thing is taking longer to bounce back from than I'd thought. Now on to Christmas day food planning...

A few (poor quality) in progress quick snaps:

I like to watch old Christmas movies while baking Christmas Cookies. Love The Bishop's Wife with

Cary Grant.

This weekend I tried the Marrows Ginger Stout Cake from the NY Times. I will make it again and as Judy in MA suggests cut back on the oil a bit. Delicious cake tho.

Egg Nog ice cream from A Perfect Scoop to go with the above Ginger Cake.

Chicken stock and then Chicken and Dumplings. Don't think I have had them in many decades. Both the stock and the dumpling dish turned out great. I was very proud of my stock this time. Good flavor, jelled a bit when chilled and pretty clear. Can't wait to make more!

wow. my legs ached just reading your marathon. I love the star pressed into the

surprise cookies. did you do that just as you took them out of the oven? great touch. I would always appreciate a box for New Years. good stress relieving idea.

Oh Maria!! What a memory re: Sound of Music. If it helps... I always think of "Maria, I just

met a girl named Maria. And suddenly I found... The most beautiful sound I ever heard.....Maria!"

I grew up with every one singing Ba-Ba-Ba....Ba-Babara Ann....

Oh I got West Side Story too --- I was a shy kid and folks bursting into song freaked me out.

Because I was little, sometimes when they sang Sound of Music and said there was "a problem with Maria" I took it a bit too literally and the shy little kid in me wondered what she'd done wrong.

Also, why did they play the "problem" song when she got married? Wasn't she done being a problem now that they'd fallen in love and were getting married?

Yes, little kids names Maria wondered these things!

I got either the state song of Maryland or this sentence: "Wait. Don't tell me! I know your...

name is a state..."

Virginia!

No...

Georgia?

No....

(I'm surprised no one ever picked Rhode Island.)
