A friend just asked what the definition of "foodie" is. What's your definition?

My simple explanation is: A person who not only loves to eat well, but has an interest in food

where/how it is grown, prefers to buy fresh locally, when possible, wants to cook it simply but well, to bring out the best flavor of the very freshest foods.

A more detailed explanation is this one I like.

To be a foodie is not only to like food, but to be interested in it. Just as a good student will have a thirst for knowledge, a foodie wants to learn about food. A foodie will never answer the question "What are you eating" with "I don't know." There are some basic traits of being a foodie, as there are basic traits that come with all labels. Generally, you have to know what you like, why you like it, recognize why some foods are better than others and want to have good tasting food all or certainly most of the time. This doesn't mean that you can't eat flaming hot Cheetos every now and again, but it does mean that you don't fool yourself into thinking that it's a nutritionally balanced meal. Do you have to know the difference between a beefsteak tomato and an heirloom tomato? No, but you might be interested to find out what it is. Do you have to only shop at farmer's markets? No, but you still look for good, fresh produce. Are there some foods you just don't like or weird foods you like? That's ok - it doesn't make you any less of a foodie. Just like food, learn about food and, most importantly, eat food.

Just remembered what the foodie in me did last summer......

We went with another couple to a winery about 20 minutes out of town. On Thursday nights, the winery heats up their wood fired brick ovens on the patio overlooking their meadows and ponds. They make the pizzas to your liking using fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

My friend and I ordered a romaine lettuce salad to go with our pizzas.
I was horrified to see my long time friend, carefully cutting the green leafy parts away from the white middle section and moving them to a corner of her plate. "What are you doing?" I said.
She looked at me at started to laugh telling me she loves romaine leaves but not the white middle section. She also told me that I had the most horrified look on my face and it made her laugh!

Karen, I found the same definition on line that you posted and am fairly happy with it....

until Richard posted his definition!! LOL!!!

Thank you Richard smileys/smile.gif

Yes, I liked that one I found online as well ,and one of the best I have found that sums up

what I think of myself, as a foodie. As far as Richard's comment goes, I was puzzled by it at first and then thought maybe that is how he looks at it for himself.
Personally, I think we should all be interested in our food and where it comes from. After reading Fast Food Nation, The Omnivore's Delemma, and Kitchen Confidential, I really became concerned about my food. The food industry has become very scary.Going a step further here, when I speek with the grower's at the Farmer's Market and they tell me what is going on with seeds, it is even more of a concern.

That is EXACTLY how I define it... When I am not in the kitchen, I am thinking about what to make

try etc. Could be for today, next week or in 6 months.

Also, when I think of a person, my mind goes to what they enjoy.

Yes, Yes, I plan my RV trips around Farmer's Markets, coastlines, so I can buy fresh fish off the

boats. Think, Morro Bay, CA, Trinidad, CA, places in OR.
Did a lot of lake, tree, volcano, lighthouse, waterfalls, mountains, raising the children and taking them places to further their education, now it is my turn! LOL
