Hopefully it's not too late to thank them for being there. I just mailed my mom a "Thank You" card
voicing appreciation for straightening my pigeon-toed walk when I was six.
As I walk through the halls here at work, I'm constantly amazed at how many people have that problem and am awed that my parents took the time, expense and abuse to "torture me" (or so I thought) into wearing ugly high-top brown shoes with metal braces to school, shoes that forced my feet to turn out into a normal stance. Especially considering the number of kids we had in our family PLUS we all wore glasses too.
First graders can be cruel.
Today, I can get into fourth position like the best of them.
