A question. There was frozen product that I bought at Trader Joes.

It was by the Asian appetizers. They were little nests of shredded onion, carrots, and maybe potatoes (not sure about the potatoes). You deep fried them and they were like onion fritters/straws. They were very good. We are doing our tempura/fondue on NY's eve and I would like to make some of these. There was a name for them, but I can't recall what it was. Ring a bell with anyone? Thanks!

Was it a vegetable tempura? They use julienned veggies, and the same batter as for shrimp tempura..

We call them vegetable tempura, but I can google the Japanese word for it....

Thanks, I would appreciate it. It might be shredded vegetables

put in tempura batter and then let the excess drain off. They were very good. I just can't remember if there were other vegetables in there besides carrots and onions. Thanks Sandi!

I've never made it before, but the recipe in this link looks like the ones I've eaten....

Search on "kakiage" or "mixed tempura". When I searched, I saw some recipes that included shrimp or scallops along with the veggies, but I've never eaten it like that. The veggies like the ones in the link are the ones I usually see.

I never make tempura at home - I can never get the batter as light and lacy as the Japanese restaurants, so I leave it to them to make it smileys/smile.gif

That looks like it, Sandi. There wasn't any shrimp in the ones that I bought

either. They fried up really nice and light. I am definitely going to make these. Thanks!
