I used to be rigorous in keeping the avocadoes neatly sliced and mush-free. This meant they were simply seasoned with lemon juice and sprinkled with salt. That's it. Any other actions mushed them up.
But after your post, we've made the tomato/avocado salad a few times--and now I am a convert.
