their Italian-style canned plum tomatoes. They were the best, and only 99 cents.

I made a lackluster sauce last night with Progresso ($1.99). It's just not the same.

What is everyone's favorite brand of canned plum tomatoes?

Joe, I loved their chai green tea and can no longer find it. I use San Marzano Tomatoes.

No real brand onthe ones I love - these have the acid you are talking about Marilyn

They are a 'generic' looking white label with red tomatoes (not a pix but just a print - almost like old printing) on them that say San Marzano and then depending on the type, they have a band at the top and bottom in a color - green for whole, blue I think for crushed, etc. I just wet and looked at them for a brand name and found that they are imported by Simpson out of NY.

I never buy anything but whole - I crush them myself - better quality tomatoes go into whole tomatoes. These ar perfect for everythinhg I make and I always keep them on hand. Not cheap though - a tad more than Hunt's or something but definitely worth it. The Muir Glen get the vote from both CI and Consumer Reports if I recall correctly but these are better.

*Sniff* They don't have any remaining stock, at least not at the three stores near me.

Thank you everyone. This gives me a lot to try. I've been so attached to TJ's tomatoes,

I'd never bothered to try any others.

I know I'll never get that quality for 99 cents again, but a couple bucks more per pot of sauce won't kill me.

Ridiculously expensive, but ridiculously good. I just ordered some of these San Marzanos that

an Italian friend got last year and raved about. They are totally unlike any canned tomatoes I have ever eaten, including Muir Glen (which is no longer available in Ontario I think). Which is to say, they taste like pure good ripe tomatoes. And they hold together when cooked (unless you want to break them down with a spoon), unlike most which come out of the can already a mush.

$9 per 28-oz can? (or the expensive ones at $15/28-oz can? and that

doesn't include shipping? I think I will just fly to Italy and bring an extra suitcase. There is no excuse for paying that much for a can of tomatoes.

I have seen these. Are they dried tomatoes or just chopped tomatoes that

have been vacuum-packed? Thanks!

Joe-do you have an Italian market or deli nearby? We have a nice one & they always have case prices

on good (usually san marzano) tomatoes.
