Any advice on cup capacities?

Any suggestions on current models?

I think I want to spend under $100.

I would probably be using this mostly when I entertain need a lot of rice, mostly jasmine or long grain, and already have all 4 burners on the stove in use. Plus, I like the idea of having goof proof rice... since we switched to a gas stove top, I have had very mixed results when making rice.

Thanks -

after spending $50 on the biggest one i could find in a typical retail store (i believe it was rival

i hated it. the rice was mushy on the bottom & partially uncooked on the top. i ended up having to play around with the water need, plus secure the lid so it would cook even slightly properly, & it was still mushy (& brown on the bottom). i ended up buying at commercial rice cooker at a restaurant supplier - i paid $250 (CDN) for mine, but the capacity is huge (30 dry cups of rice), & i know smaller ones are available. i would check around a supplier store - you'll be much happier in the end.

Hallie I had an inexpensive one once too and hated it!!!. I think it was Wolfang Puck who said

you could cook your rice perfectly in the pressure cooker. I tried it once, long ago, it was wonderful. YOu'll have to check your pressure cooker book, if you have one. You put the rice in a metal bowl that will fit in your cooker and add water (according to your book)....

I have an older hitachi given to me by a friend who got it from her mother-in-law. . .

who was filipino. Works great. I have heard that the newer ones are even better at "deciding" when the rice is done.

I would recommend that if you have an oriental or japanese grocery store near you that you buy one there. The do come in all sizes and I have seen little ones that look just like the great bid ol' chinese restaurant ones.

Rice cookers are the #1 most popular small appliance in Hawaii and I asked around

The consensus of those I asked (I don't own one myself) is that the Hitachis are the best. Hope it helps. You have no idea how many rice cookers there are just on this island!

I have a very inexpensive Black and Decker - cost about $30 and makes perfect rice every time. But..

it's probably too small for you, with just a 7-cup capacity. They do have 21 and 24 cup capacity models now, also for about $30.00 - $35.00, but I don't know how the quality compares to the 7-cup one.

By the way, the 7-cup capacity is of course for the raw rice. The cooked yield is 14 - 16 cups.
