Hi all,

First time poster. Planning 2 days in Positano & 2 days in Sorrento (also 4 days in Florence> Any recommendations about fairly priced good restaurants would be really appreciated. Thanks ilfis

Will post some later...

We've been to Florence several times but more than just the restaurants, there are some private tour guides you can hire in both areas that will take you to some very good, off the beaten path places that are much better than the tourist traps. I'll get that name and post it. They can hook you up with people in each area of Italy.

I have a thought ..

My Mom has journaled her Italy trips and they include the Almafi Coast.

I hope it is okay to post her url - this is her own site and it is simply a hobby and her passin she makes no money off of it and there is no benefit to directing traffic there except for you to read her travels and get some inside tips. (Sorry just trying to jusify posting her url).

We lived there for 8 years and have traveled extensively in Italy.

If you head to her website click under Culinary Journal.

Of note in Florence we always stop at Il Latini and Cibreino (Piazza Ghiberti). If I recall Il Cibreo (the famous and fabulous restaurant) has a little bistro type place right next to the main restaurant and we have had some delicious meals there (for a fraction of the price) - but it is an entirely different atmosphere. You almost feel like you are in someone's kitchen eating. Vin Santo with Cantucci are a must eat for dessert.

If you have the time in Florence ...

Try to squeeze in a day class at La Cucina del Garga, run by Sharon Oddson who, with her husband, started the now-renowned Trattoria Garga. Her classes are small and fun, held in her home near the restaurant, and you'll have a long, delicious lunch you helped cook, with some great wines. The optional market trip (to San Lorenzo) is also an education. Sharon is a former Canadian, so English is not a problem, as it can be at some other cooking classes. (I think she has a memoir/cookbook coming out soon as well.)

We spent two weeks in and around Florence this time last year (and are considering the Amalfi, or at least Naples, as part of our next trip). Don't pass up the gelato at Gelateria Carabé -- the almond granita is out of this world. Almost every day we would "get lost" and find ourselves outside the shop, stop in for a gelato, walk around the block, and go back for seconds.

Our PBS station has the Rick Steves travel show and last night he was in Venice and Verona. Perhaps

check out the PBS website for information on his travels near your destination. Also, the show Smart Travel came on right afterwards and they may also have some good info. His show was on Croatia--the Dalmation Coast-- and it sounded fantastic, but he may have good stuff on Amalfi.
