African Peanut stew?

Has anyone ever made it? My dh has been a real guinea pig lately and I'm nervous about making this. I have two recipes, one from NYT (chicken mafe) and one from Saveur , African peanut stew. They're very different and I'm wondering if anyone has experience or a tried and true recipe, or should I play it safe and give experimenting a rest?

 
Whichever you choose, make sure to add chopped nuts, cilanto and a

squeeze of lemon or lime on top of the finished serving. It makes the entire dish--and your mouth--happier.
