After Bub being out of work

for the last two years (he had a contract in between) he has just gotten work at a good company. He is a temp for now, but I am sure he will be hired on permanently in the near future.

For all of you out there who are having a hard time, my thoughts and prayers are with you. I know how difficult it can be. From the bottom of my heart, I hope this new year will be a good one for all of us. Happy New Year, my friends! Dawn

Hi Dawn. I hope this year is better for you and your family. We have had...

...some serious challenges, but we thank God we are all healthy and together this holiday season.

I know it doesn't help a whole lot when you're in the middle of financial crisis, but we've tried to focus as best as we can on the positive lessons this craziness is teaching us.

For us, first and foremost is the re-dedication to making sure family and friends stay at the top of our priorities, and that we draw closer to them and not let hardship get in the way of relationships. We see this as a spiritual priority as well, and as a family we tend to put that first.

Secondly, and this is kind of obvious, we have become very much aware of how our habits during the "boom times" were so foolish and unnecessary. The changes we're making (and have made over the last 2 1/2 years) will serve us well and continue to bless us the rest of our lives. It has been a true reality check, and I'm thankful for it.

I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir here, but please know that we share your hope for a better 2012, and we will continue to pray for you and your wonderful family. Your friendship, along with the great recipes you've provided over the years, are treasures to me.

Michael

Dawn, Jacques is working part time after over a year of scrambling around

It's only minding a shop but it makes a huge difference. Looking for work can be so depressing, especially in the middle of a depression.

I'm glad to hear Bub is on his way to a steady job and that the New Year is looking up for you and your family.

Very well said Michael and so true. I think because I'm basically

a spend thrift and a bit of a miser I have always tried to use every last morsel of food. Yet, just this morning John was helping me prep and asked what he should do with the ends off of the asparagus and I said to just throw it away. About an hour later I suddenly realized how wasteful that is. Because I only make chicken stock and not vegetable I've just not bothered with them. There is no reason that they couldn't just be stored in the freezer to use with my next stock making. Every little bit makes a difference. Dawn, keep thinking positive and you will all come out fine. This is hard on Bub and you will help him to deal with it and that is important. Merry Christmas to you both.

Dawn, I wish my cousin would read these posts. She visited me last week, and complained that her

tax dollars were going to be spent on another extension of unemployment benefits, to be paid to people who have no incentive to look for a job because they are drawing unemployment checks.

I have friends and family who are also desperate for jobs, and a way to pay for their homes and to provide for their children.

My cousin needs a reality check. She is so insulated from the real world, and has no concept of how this disastrous economy has affected average people.

I join Michael and all of you in hoping for a brighter, better 2012. 2011 sure sucked!

THIS is the #1 thing I would like to see thrown out of even thinking it!!!!

This is America people. Some of the hardest working people in the world and to suddenly call them out as lazy? Or to even receive an unemployment check they must be drug tested? Really?? John is 62 years old and has been working for pay since 14 and has paid into unemployment all that time and never used it before. To say he should have to be drug tested (he's in the airline industry)is SHAMELESS! It's called Social Security and unemployment "INSURANCE". Just like health insurance. You pay into it knowing if you should need it it will be there. There is no one, and I repeat NO ONE that gets more in unemployment checks than their former monthly pay! Doesn't happen. It is based on what you have put into it. It's that simple. This debasing of our people has got to stop. They have done nothing wrong. Set her straight Marianne. Even if it's just you and me we might be able to get through. With that little rant....Merry Christmas!

Orchid, I'm with you 100 per cent! When did an insurance claim become an "entitlement"

in need of reform?

Thank you everyone. We are lucky, we have a wonderful support group

around us; including friends and family. I am looking forward to this new year and I hope it is good for all of us. Thank you all for your kind words.

Congrats to you and DH, and best wishes for the new year

You deserve a break.

The thing that irritates me is that those of us who have lost their job, but aren't eligible for unemployment checks are not even counted in the unemployment rate. Argghh!
