Altho Julia's Baked Bean were OK, I prefer mustard, brown sugar and Ketchup -is there a substitute?

That doesn't use any GF or black pepper? (I hope to continue using dried beans to avoid other additives.)

Anna, what is GF? I think you could leave out the black pepper and it would be just fine.

The problem with bottled Ketchup is that regular Heinz for example uses tomato concentrate, vinegar, corn syrup, salt, unexplained spice, onion poweder and natural flavoring (what is that really?). If I use ketchup for myself, it's not a problem. Might tomato paste and a dollop of vinegar give a similar flavor?

I think tomato paste and a dollop of vinegar would be fine. I've made Julia's often and it is very

northern, yankee. But the slow cooker method should work for any recipe. My mom used to add mustard, ketchup and brown sugar to canned pork and beans and cook slowly in the oven. I'm sure that would work in a crock pot. Since the cooking time is long you could probably get away with chopped tomatoes and vinegar.

Born in the Mid-West, I really do like sticky-sweet-tart...

Didn't know there was a Yankee style of beans. Thanks for explaining that.

I thought so, but your message says "doesn't use any GF...", so that confused me.

thought maybe you were trying to avoid something else, but I think you meant doesn't use gluten.
