And they said it couldn't be done...Cincinnati Banana Farm!

OHMYGOSH! I hadn't even thought about them (imagine that)...

Maybe winged monkeys will swoop in and carry all the rabbits, squirrels, groundhogs, etc. away. I would gladly sacrifice my just hatched stalk of bananas.

Time to go rig up some squirrel deterrents...

When I got my first bananas on my tree I was in Jeddah and the Filipinos

all told me to cut the blossom as soon as the banana cluster was completely formed. And they all use the blossom in their cooking. I never did find out how and didn't have Internet yet at that time. I think they used them in some kind of soup. I used the leaves all the time. I would pick really pretty ones and wipe them with mayo to make them shine and then use on a platter for appetizers. Your bananas are beautiful Richard! John said you might want to start getting some little coats prepared for them...;0)

Good thing there aren't too many fruit bats...

in your neighborhood!

I recall visiting our daughter when she was doing rainforest study in Australia, and the site had banana plants and mango trees and the fruit bats would strip the crop right off the plants faster than the students could pick them.

The first time I saw fruit bats was in

Sri Lanka. A huge tree filled with them and OMG, they were HUGE!

Or was it

Bali, Indonesia or the Philippines? Sometimes it all jumbles together. Not that important but you wish you could get it right.

Wow Richard- here is some banana news

I've raised a lot of bananas in my time here- they really take six to twelve months to mature from flowering....so you may have to take them inside to finish the process. I couldn't tell by the photo if you have a dwarf variety or a full-on Williams or some other variety. Do you know?

Unreal for Ohio!

Great Richard. what will the 1st banana be used for?

you can freeze them for smoothies and cakes etc...they all like to ripen at once. We peel the ones getting too ripe and freeze flat in a large ziplock so they are easy to break apart.
