Another non-food question: Can someone explain to me how to turn on "closed captioning"?

I have a DVD set from a TV series that used to provide English subtitles. They stopped that on the last two years. But they do provide "closed captioning".

For the life of me, I can't figure how to turn it on.

Does the TV have to be on MUTE for it to work? Because that's not going to cut it. I need to hear AND see the dialog.

Marilyn, no DVD here but I can turn the captioning on or off by using

the remote for my TV. Maybe this will do it. On the TV remote I hit menu, arrow down to caption and then arrow right through the different options. When you get to On just leave it there. Maybe this will work?

 
I've read my TV manual and looked at the remote. No mention of caption on either.

Does Caption fall under the subtitle or Language area? Or is it its own category?

I know there's an issue about the age of the TV, but this one was bought in 2000, so I think that's new enough to have the capability.

On my remote, the button says Menu and when I push it all the different

options come up. That is where the caption is but we know that all remotes are not the same. I think it's a conspiracy to just keep us all confused, ya think?

 
I'm pretty sure you need a "decoder" to receive closed captions. I remember trying and

not being able to get it so I called the cable company and asked.

 
The feature is on almost all TV's, but not on all programs.

Some programs, particularly locally produced ones, do not have closed captioning. I have found that some DVD's have closed captioning available if your TV has that feature turned on. The ones that are being sold for $1 at some discount stores, usually do not.
