Another pepper question! Do sweet bell peppers go from green to...

red to orange to yellow (as I always thought)? Or some other order?

I am asking because I always see green bell peppers in the store that have areas on them where they are going red.. not yellow or orange.

But I heard on tv the other day that they turn yellow before they turn red. Is this right?

(Oh, the things I lay awake at night wondering about!) ;o)

you're too funny! they all start out green and then turn to whatever the ripe pepper is.

I don't think they go from red to yellow, I think it's what pepper species they are that determines the final color.

now get some sleep '-))

Thanks Ruth. I did see this when I googled, but it doesn't tell much about the Panco variety...

I like the fluorescent red and green peppers at the like you provided, though! (Aruba Sweet Peppers) Wow.

But are the red and yellow peppers that we always see in the store not just different stages of...

development for the same variety? Maybe not! I always thought so.

looking at the link that Ruth posted, it looks like they are different varieties so I don't

think they morph from red to yellow to orange.

of course, I could be wrong, it wouldn't be the first time '-))

I've got green peppers growing in my garden right now. They start green and then turn red.

They're never yellow and only orange in spots while ripening to red.

I believe the yellow ones are a special variety......

We have some regular sweet bell peppers (mangos to some) and then we also planted some red ones. Both are green at first and turn red but the sweet bells take longer to turn red than the REDS. Imagine! ha

I believe the red bell peppers are the more common variety and easier to grow, so if one is

growing that will be picked green, it makes sense to use the hardiest variety, in this case red.

I have learned that peppers are like tomatoes>>>

They all start out green but some turn red and others turn yellow when they are ripe. So the answer to your question is that the red and yellow peppers are not the same varieties.
