I really appreciate your info, cyalexa. We have a mini-dauchsy and we feed her Nature's Recipe

for the Toy Breed. I'd love your opinion on it since you are so knowledgeable.

re. Nature's Recipe

I don't have any personal experience with that brand. A google search reveals that it is made by Del Monte, a large company that does not have pet food as its primary interest. I used to think that breed-specific diets were mostly a marketing ploy but have been convinced that for at least one company (Royal Canin) a lot of research went into the diets. Don't let the term "natural" sway you, that is definitely all about marketing. If you and your veterinarian think your pet is doing well on that diet there is no reason that I know of to make a change. BTW, I really like Dachshunds, especially minis.

Ours barks. A lot. smileys/smile.gif We chose this brand because it didn't have any corn products in it.

She's pretty fierce for such a little bitty thing. Loyal. Loud. Protective. We adopted her from a family at my school who couldn't keep her any longer. She was 3 when we got her and she's 4 1/2 now.

She's Xena, Warrior Princess Dog!!!!

pet names with clauses

I can tell that you really love your pet.

I wanted to share the name of my husband's cat: Cleopatra, Queen of the Garage

We live in the country and had a bad mouse problem in our garage a couple years ago. I went to a cat rescue and chose a cat that was not likely to be adopted by anyone else as she was very difficult to handle. She used to kick my Aussie off of his bed if she wanted to sleep on it. She is still a challenge for me to handle but she adores my husband and follows him all over the property when he is working outside.

I have an Aussie too! (I assume you were talking about your dog, and not your husband?)

Hoku is 13 1/2, and starting to slow down. Her eyesight and hearing are going, but she's still as smart and as loving as ever smileys/smile.gif

What food do you feed your Aussie? Hoku has a sensitive tummy, so she's been on a chicken-rice-broccoli diet for a couple of years on the advice from our vet, but I'm not convinced it's better for her than dry food...

My Aussie

The best dog I ever had was my Aussie, Pal (and I have had many dogs in my life). He was loyal, obedient, gentle and affectionate yet still a good watchdog. Sadly, I had him euthanized after he collapsed due to a bleeding abdominal tumor I didn't know he had. I fed him a Hill's product for mature dogs.

Feeding a homemade diet is a lot of work. Further, they are difficult to balance properly and require supplementation with expensive mineral mixes to be complete and balanced enough for safe long-term feeding. If you are ready to go back to a commercial diet, make the switch gradually, over about 2 weeks (1 week is enough for non-sensitive dogs). There are several good commercial diets designed for sensitive stomachs. For the most severely affected pets a therapeutic diet sold by veterinarians is necessary but many pets are helped significantly by "OTC" products. I have had good luck with both Hill's and Purina (either Select or One, don't recall which) products designed for sensitive stomachs. Also, don't leave your veterinarian out of the loop, she is your partner in keeping your pet healthy.

haven't met many

Although I have only know a few, the Belgian Shepherd Dog breeds seem to be very smart. I know they do best with owners that understand their personalities.

BTW, I visit Dallas 2 or 3 times per year to eat and shop. We recently got an outlet mall, Whole Foods and Sunshine Market in OKC but I still need to replenish my wine cooler with periodic trips to GoogyGoodys.

I grew up with Aussies but have a Belgian Malinois now

Wonderful dogs, all of them. Zoom is our Malinois and she is 9. She gets homemade food, recipe with supplements approved by our vet.

Sandi- great to see you- haven't seen you in ages!
