Ants? Sort of FRC...

A long time ago, at the "other" place, there was a big thread about keeping ants out of your kitchen... I can't find it, but I remember there being some natural repellents...

Turns out ants are all over down here, so short of keeping everything that is open in plastic containers or the fridge/freezer, what else can I do?

Chemical solutions are not a good option b/c of Gomez the doggie, so any ideas, or if you remember them form the other links, please let me know!!

Thanks

Hi, Sandra; here are some ideas.....

We had ants in Israel, and I did end up putting nearly everything in plastic containers! smileys/smile.gif Here are some other natural ideas... Since we didn't have pets, I think I used a spray, but I also remember a line of cayenne pepper working, too.

Good luck!

Sprinkle boric acid, talcum/baby powder, bay leaf, cinnamon, powdered chili/cayenne pepper, paprika, dried peppermint, damp coffee grounds, or borax where ants are coming in.

Squeeze lemon juice at the entry spot and leave the peel there.

Or Grants Ant Stakes, outside? Perhaps a local gardening store would know.

For ants in the kitchen I do the following

Prepare of solution of water, sugar, and boric acid. About a tablespoon each of the sugar and boric acid in a cup of boiling water.

When cool, soak cotton balls in the solution, and site them near the problem areas.

If you're concerned about pets or children getting into them, take a sealable plastic container. Heat a metal skewer and use it to melt some hole in the container. Then put the saturated cotton balls inside. Ants will find it, but pets & kids won't have access.

This works. I use 3 Tbl 20 Mule Team Borax, 3 Tbl borax and 1/4 C Karo

(or make a thick simple syrup).

I've put jarlids of it on window sills...would your pet know enough to go up there?

It takes a few days to work, but work it does.

Hi Sandra - I haven't tried this, but Dianne posted this tip. Good luck!

Get rid of ants
Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They
eat it, take it "home," & can't digest it so it kills
them. It may take a week or so, esp. if it rains, but it works & you don't have the worry about pets or
small children being harmed!

"Terro" is the best. When I lived in Fl, I had lots of ants (it's the ant capitol),

and used it for these tiny ants, called "crazy ants." They moved so fast, it was like they were on speed. Anyway, it's called Terro Liquid and comes in a tiny bottle - you just need a few drops in several places. It's simply sugar and boric acid. Here's a link:

Ants, Ants, Ants, they sure are pesty, 4 years ago I awoke to have

my whole kitchen window blacked out - couldn't see the sun light and my tan kitchen counters were extremely black by 100 of thousands of ants all over my kitchen (found out the house had been built on a mega ant colony - though the house is 27 years old go figure-) What I did was this to kill the live one's all over my kitchen: Now mind you I was in a panic and rushing around helter skelter freaking out is more like it

> I took a large spray bottle filled it half with clorox beach (any bleach will do)(refilled it lots of times) and half water and proceeded to squirt all the ants THIS KILLED THEM INSTANTLY!!!!!- then sweep them dead corpses into a plastic bag, it too some time but I got them all (about 40 minutes) then I bleached and scrubed all my counter tops and windows, I put everything out on the patio that was on the counter top (to this day I keep minimal things on my counter top) I found out they were attracted to the fruit bowl needless to say no more fruit bowl {I had gone to Costco found a tall three tier metal basket rack stand and put all my fruit & vegetables there plus it look decorative} I had one more bout with ants after that about a month later did the same thing. After cleaning I put boric acid and crushed bay leaves in the corners but you know what worked I had a green fern (christmas tree) sented candle put it on the counter and to this day (yankee candle is still there) NO ANTS Plus I had an exterminator come out and outside I laid lots of boric acid and bay leaves. LOTS OF WORK BUT NO ANTS!!!

Thanks, Marilyn; it keeps me off the streets. smileys/wink.gif

If you can locate where they are coming in, sprinkle a line of garlic salt down... they won't cross.

Thanks for all the replies...

I will be trying ALL of them!

I haven't seen any more - looks like I got the firts batch - hopefully they stay out now that I put everything in tupperwear type stuff, but I will put some spices and stuff down, just in case...

I don't know what type of ants they are, they look like just plain black ants, tiny, not very fast...

Eu eu eu...
