Any cheap ideas for a cake carrier? Has to travel over an hour in car, then on to recipient.

Place cake on plate on top of bubble wrap or shelf liner (the one with holes). Cover with

your largest bowl or inverted stock pot. The whole contraption can be in a box lid like reams of paper come in or on a cookie sheet, something flatish.

Not sure if you are looking for something more 'disposable' or not but

my mom bakes cakes by the dozen for church, friends and neighbors. She starts out by getting cheap but pretty plates from Goodwill - usually for about $1. Then she gets cheap cake carriers from Dollar Tree - one hint - don't count on them being locked or strong, always carry by the base - I learned the hard way - the bottom flexed enough that it slipped out of the lid and fell - I managed to catch about 1/2 of it in the lid as it fell to the ground. Not sure what you mean by 'then on to recipient' - whether you are shipping it or what but if needed, you can pack in a box from there. If not looking for a 'disposable' solution, my square folding cooler from Costco is perfect for things like this and allows me to put some ice packs around it to keep it cool. And I have seen some shipping boxes that have a silver insualted bubble wrap liner but I don't know where to get them.

I just buy regular bakery cake boxes from a cake supply store for around 50 cents apiece. If cake

needs to be chilled, I set the bakery box containing the cake down inside a cooler that has a layer of ice inside a Ziplock bag and off we go for delivery.

I just put a small square of rubberized shelf 'paper' or shelf liner under the plate (or cardboard

circle) my cake sits on before putting all inside my Tupperware cake carrier, and that will keep the cake from sliding around while transporting it. Do make sure it is sitting on a flat surface.

For one 9" or 10" layer cake, you don't need anything as big as a yoga mat, but for multiple cakes, a yoga mat would be great. (Be sure & read the final comment from 'chowser' in the tips Meryl linked to -- I laughed out loud!)
