Any computer geniuses out there - lost file in all these computer issues

I am having. One tech reformatted the drive and I thought I had a good backup but didn't - lost all the work I have put in my family and friends cookbook since last August and some of it I threw the hard copies away when I entered them.

Anybody know if there is a chance that it can be found and recovered in any shape form or fashion?

My husband says that when you delete something, usually the first character of the file name is

deleted. Then the file space is marked as available. If you haven't used any or very much disk space afterward you can run a recover program and it will usually recover the deleted information, but not always.

Also you can take it a place that specializes in disc recovery. A simple recovery runs usually up to $1,000 and forensics can be thousands of dollars.

It depends on how the formatting was done, and how much disk space they used after that; it very well could end up big bucks to recover now

Oh no! First - don't use it until you get , or take it to, a recovery program/tech. Like Marsha

says, the more you type, the more you write over the old files. Things aren't actually *deleted* from computers, I've learned, just "written over". I once deleted my Masters thesis, but luckily I was able to recover some, and scanned in the rest from my hard copy.

So... "I feel your pain!"

I'm feeling for you. I just lost some important bz. files...

I was sure I was copying them to flash drive and, voila, they were gone. I had most of it backed up on a different flash drive - still - I am stupified, irked, and a bit scared of it happening again.

Say a prayer - the tech guy from my old job said there is a good chance to get it back....

It should have had at least six files out there - the actual database as well as the minimum of 5 backups. I hadn't made many changes lately especially not on the family and friends recipes - mainly just some things from this board and such that I can easily and quickly recapture.

I took it to him this afternoon and he's working on it now. Just hope it doesn't take too much or cost much to find it.
