While this is geared towards kids, it works for adults too:

Hi Kids!!

Today we are going to go after all of our books. Let's take a walk through our house and look for any of our books that we have left around. Let's gather those up and return them to our rooms or where they belong in the house.

Once you have done this take a few minutes to look over your books. Is it time to bless someone else with some of them? Do you have some books that you just did not enjoy? Do you have books that you are no longer interested in reading again? Do you have books that you have outgrown? Today is the day to gather these up and take them to mom or

dad and ask them to help you bless someone else with your books that you no longer need.

Remember what I always say: The less stuff to clean and put away means more time to play!!

Love,

Kelly

I do this twice a year for my church's used book sale but somehow there are always

more. They multiply, like wire hangers in the closet. Cookbooks are most prolific because of gifts.

Likewise... My parents and their thousands of books. Maybe if we'd started doing this in 1981... smileys/wink.gif

Nooo! You can't take my books away!

I still haven't gotten over the time a friend came over and convinced me to do a book clean out telling me, look if you want to reread those you can just get them from the library (where I gave them all too).

Yeah, years later found out those books, which were my hard cover Dark Tower books, together were now worth about $12K.

I will cull reference books and such though. I'm pretty mindful now what I keep/buy when it comes to books. I have to want them in my personal library because space is limited, so they have to earn a spot.

I come up with 3-4 books to give away every year. Aside from regular purchasing, I buy so many at

the library sale with the intention of just reading them. It works on about 3-4- a year which I freecycle.
The kindle has helped though in the spreading of the books through the house.

My Mom is funny about books. She reads 3-4 at a time; ie one book in the kitchen, a different one

at her bedside; one in the den, and a book on cassette in the car. I do not know how she can keep each book straight!

She does hate to depart with her books; but when she does, she generally sends some over here. She is funny. She writes a note on a post it and has it on the inside cover. I get her interpretation of the book. Always makes me smile. "Real page turner" "Very well written" "light reading, but heavy subject matter:" You get it.

I feel your pain. I loaned my first edition John Updike novels to friends in the 60's. Of course I

never kept up with them or got them back. Now they are worth quite a bit of money. Luckily a couple survived. When I cull my books now I put all hard cover first editions on one or two shelves in my office. They are labeled so my heirs don't sell them for 25 cents.

That's like saying, go through your friends and decide which ones you want never to speak to again

I did try recently - our school asked for donations for the homeless families, and I went through my books, but could only find three or so that I could bear to part with. If a book isn't a friend, I part with it pretty soon, but the rest, I have to have around me. I am addicted to reading, I read all the time.

The Kindle has helped a little, but I still have to complete various collections. I recently found two more in the ballet series that I read as a child (SO happy) and only need two more to complete that series.

I must start doing the FlyLady thing again ( I LOVE her feather duster), but not the books. smileys/smile.gif

I have just the opposite problem. My sister garage sales & gives me grocery sacks full of books

Very quickly they start overrunning the house. National Kidney Fund is the only charity around here who will come get them. They are too bulky & heavy for me to try to pack up & load myself.

I just gave my MIL two bags of books, so now I can go buy some new ones smileys/wink.gif
