Any good wine discoveries lately? I found two great ones: Colores Del Sol Carmenere (red) and

some other ideas

Alamos (Argentina) makes great Chardonnay and Malbec. Concho y Toro (Chile) Casillero del Diablo Cabernet Sauvignon is reliable. Mondavi Woodbridge 2006 Chardonnay and Zinfandel are also very respectable. The A-mano Primitivo from Southern Italy is also good. I think that these are all in the similar price range as the wines you mentioned - though hard for me to tell, being over here out of the US market. cheers, Bonnie

Bonnie, are US wines widely available to you? Just wondering how you keep up so well and have such

great information for us on wines.

No, unfortunately, I don't live in the west of Holland, like Amsterdam, so US wines are rather scarce here. However, the Mondavi Woodbridge is something I had just recently and thought, hmm, that's pretty darn good for the price (ie fairly inexpensive). Most Californian wines here are way over priced for what you can get from France for the same money. US wines are the gap in my wine knowledge, sadly. How is your wine selection there in Alaska? Is it state controlled? Anyway, Ang, I am a gardener too -- loved your garden photos. A couple of my garden are at

cheers, Bonnie

Kumala's (West Africa) Sauvignon Blanc...

I had this at a B&B we stayed at in Bennington VT in October and it was wonderful: chilled, crisp and dry. Have not been able to find this West African wine anywhere in No. Virginia - other than Wegman's wine shop had a Kumala chardonnay that was good (but no sauv.blanc). I think I'm going to try some South African wines in the meantime (and see if I can get Wegman's wine shop mgr to track down some of the SB).

thanks bonnie. I will try the Woodbridge. We have so many moderately priced wines like Mondavi and

Chateau St Michelle and on and on that sometimes I overlook the good ones. I'll take a look at your garden---I have garden withdrawal right now. We have an OK selection of the regular US wines and do not have State regulated stores like in Oklahoma. I have trouble finding some of the nice wines from Chile and Spain etc that you all mention. I'm still trying to find a Lambrusco other than Riunite.

Great garden Bonnie! Love the shot of the lighthouse, a lighthouse freak here. Sweet Doggies!!

I just went to a wine tasting with wines from the country of Georgia. Very interesting flavor

profiles.

I met the wine buyer for Whole Foods and he said Georgia was the last untapped place for exquisite wines. He explained that Georgia has a wine tradition dating back to the days of the Egyptian Pharaohs (7,000 years) and Georgia is on the historic spice trade route. The grapes grown there are indigenous.

Why haven't you heard of wines from Georgia? Previously they had a long tradition of exporting wines for the Russian market. A skirmish in 2006 resulted in an embargo against wines from Georgia, which impacted the economy significantly (90% of their wines went to Russia.)

As a result of the embargo, they were forced to find a new market. Folks here in Seattle teamed up with USAID and Whole Foods, helped the Georgian's build a distribution channel and poise themselves for the international market. Voila! In less than 18 months, their wines were being distributed in the US.

It's a fascinating story...and even more intriguing are the wines themselves. Lots of character for a price point largely under $20. (Whole Foods sells most around $10-12 a bottle.)

Grocery stores can sell wine where you live? Not in New York state. They

can sell beer, but only liquor stores can sell wine or liquor here (except for hard lemonade, wine cocktails lie Ripple - do they still make that?!, sangria, etc.).

And liquor stores don't sell beer! I never understood that!

When I moved from NYS to NC many years ago I was shocked to

see wine for sale at the grocery stores (here in VA as well). On a trip back to NY years later, I was shocked to learn that I had to go to the liquor store to buy a bottle of wine...but I had to admit it was nice to be waited on by people who knew their wines smileys/smile.gif Now I prefer to buy wine at a nearby Whole Foods that sells wine from a wide variety of countries and (US) states.

e-mailed this to my wine dude here, as I told you for a small town our selection rocks!
