Any one know how to search the archives at the ol' "Gail's"...

I stated my question incorrectly (although thank you Marilyn!)

I meant to ask if there is a way to go through chunks of archives at a time, like we used to be able to. Like posts 10,000 - 11,000. Versus 'searching on a word or text.

Thanks,

I can help you there too...

The first link is for a specific post. Note the address has the actual post number at the end.

All you have to do is remove the specific post number and let the .html come after the archived "100 posts" range (45801-45900.html) (see image link).

All the archives are in that format, so if you have a printout of a recipe, look at the header or footer information and you'll see the full path. If you want to search that entire list of 100 posts, just type the range of numbers you want.

That will give you the list.

But epicurious.com has it set up that the links don't work directly. So just find the post you want, go up to the address bar, type in the actual post number BEFORE the .html and that will get you there. If you want to read a response to a post, you need to add the post number, add a / then add the number of the response. Say the one you want is a first response to the 3rd response. You would have /range-range/postnumber/3/1.html in the address bar. Hit return and you go directly to that subresponse.

For example, if you added /45804/2/1/1/1.html to archive_swap45801-45900.html, you would get to a sub-sub-sub response that starts "Hey Moyn"

I'm sure there is some slick way to just get to a post easier, but I don't know what it is.

Ahhh... thank you so much! I get it!!

Thanks, Marilyn. I appreciate you taking the time to walk me through it:)

O.K.Marilyn, me next-is it possible to access the Goumet or BA archives prior to 2005?......

I left the EpiEditor this question, but I think they are ignoring me.

Here is my whine--my Louisana Pecan cake is in Adobe PDF and can't copy and paste, so since I couldn't pull it our of archives, had to type WHAAAAA!

Is that the Member's recipe section? I could max out at 532 pecan listings

but, as you said, there were none earlier than 2005. The path doesn't give any clue either.

If you have a soft copy of the PDF file, I might be able to convert it for you. I'll send you my email in a PM.

But it sounds like you already retyped it.
So you're trying to access other older recipes that you entered, is that right?

I've never used that area of epicurious.

Yeah, thanks, I have them in my files and have typed most, but sometimes I remeber a wonderful one--

one I didn't save or just a cool post that would be fun to read again--guess they are gone, sniffle, sniffle. That one was 2003-04.
Thanks much

I think I'm getting closer...check out this example of a link. Does this look familiar at all?

This list of posts is from 1998.

But I'll need something specific to confirm I'm right...either your user name or the exact name that any post that you're looking for. That way I can see if I'm actually finding it.

Hence the PM.

Also, I guess you don't need the file converted from PDF to Word?

Marilyn you are a genius!!!! Beautiful, I actually spent quite some time hanging with gang the over.

there and lurking the Swap before I started posting there in 2003-04. Wowee, thanks so much!!
Maybe someday--no rush, when you get a few minutes, PM me how you found them. The links are saved in two places.
Have a super day!

It's actually quite easy to get to a post...use the basic Kitchen Seek page...

1. DESELECT the first checkbox that says "All Epicurious forums" (this finds too many results)

2. Toodle down to the bottom and SELECT both the Bon Appétit@Epicurious box and the Gourmet@Epicurious box (if you need both: you may know it was written in Bon Appetit and in that case, just select it.)

3. Go to the "SEARCH WHEN" fields.
3a. Change the year to one closer to what you're looking for...say Post "BEFORE" and "this date" =
01/01/01 (searches everything from forum start date to Dec 31, 2000). It doesn't like to find more than 200 at a time, so if that happens, narrow the date again.

4. Don't forget to put something in the FIND field. (you can even put your name there, but it needs to match whatever you used at the time)

5. To view an entire block of 100 threads: Remove the specific post number from the end of the address and let the .html come directly after the first-last thread range. See example:

http://63.123.232.200/HyperNews/get/archive_bon_appetit701-800.html

Note the only difference in each of these archive forums is the addition of the forum name before the post range.

By the way, you have to use this search page. If you go the regular epicurious.com site, they're only including the posts after 2004 (as you noted with utter frustration) and in a different format. (This tidbit of info is for anyone other than Nan reading this post.)

If these steps aren't clear, let me know and I'll try to explain it better.

PS: Sorry that I couldn't find the Louisiana cake you originally posted. If you remember any specific words entered in the post, it might help in the search.
