Any suggestions for a "salt-free" diet? Reading labels like crazy. I'm amazed. Everything

Everything seems to have salt in it. Picked up the book "No-Salt, Lowest Sodium Cookbook" by David Gazzaniga. Tried the chicken veggie soup. Was very bland and tasteless. DH just got out of hospital. Has problems with water retention, congestive heart failure. TIA

Just learned that I must adopt a low salt diet, too. Doctor's advice was...

1st, don't eat anything that comes in a package, i.e. chips, boxed food mixes, etc. All are loaded with salt. My doctor recognized that its more work for me, to prepare foods from scratch, instead of opening a mix, but it's the only way to control my salt intake.

2nd, don't eat in restaurants. The food is heavily salted to taste good so you will come back, not because the restaurant cares about your high blood pressure, etc.

3rd, read, read, read labels. Canned veggies are loaded with salt, so are some frozen ones. Canned soups are really bad! I see more and more "no salt" canned items on shelves now.

Salt is an acquired taste. Michael is right, you won't miss it at all after you are weaned off of it.

"Google" low sodium diets and cooking for good information. Thru this I learned that celery and beets are naturally very high in sodium, and should not be in a low salt diet. Sodium is also high in unexpected places, like crab meat! Baked goods that contain baking powder or baking soda should also be avoided, high in sodium. No more biscuits or cornbread for me!

Research the internet, you will find lots of information on low salt, low sodium diets.

Take good care of your DH!

I THINK that I read on one of the low sodium sites that rinsing doesn't remove the Na, the beans

have absorbed it.

Oh, darn. And here I thought I was being health-conscious, making hummus with canned beans.

Guess I'll really have to start using dried chickpeas (which make better-tasting hummus anyway, but still, grumble grumble).

Thanks for letting me know--good tips in there!
