Voodoo Doughnuts is a must (doughnut men with cherry filling, etc.), Apizza Scholls has the best
pizza I've had outside Italy. Know that there will be a wait. If you get there soon after opening...do. Going for a late option is not good. They close when they run out of dough...8:00pm or 9:30pm..it doesn't matter. No dough? They close. If I recall correctly, they also had an amazing caesar salad.
Paleys is a great spot too. All local ingredients. I love sitting at the bar. We order a salumi plate with their house cured meats and lardo. YUM.
Pix Patisserie is great too. I've enjoyed their pastries. Check their calendar too. They tend to have some fun events.
Park City Kitchens is another favorite place when I'm in town. It's a nice walk from Powell's bookstore.
Ah, and you MUST, MUST visit Powell's Books. Their cookbook section brings me to my knees every time!
Also near Powell's is a spot I've enjoyed a lot called Blue Hour. The space is lofty and sexy in its understated atmosphere.
I get to Portland 2-3 times a year and these spots are my regular haunts. I always seem to go on the weekend and I'll hit up Apizza Scholls when we first get in town on a Friday night, then Saturday brunch at Park City or Blue Hour. Late lunch at either of those spots I missed due to brunch choice. Paley's for late night dinner and drinks. Voodoo or Pix on the way out of town.
And Portland is home of one of my favorite beers....Hair of the Dog. It's ghastly expensive "imported" up here to Seattle, but I could be mighty happy with Hair of the Dog schooners and a charcuterie plate. smileys/smile.gif (Paley's, maybe?) HOD has a nice little following. The bottles are all numbered and you can check their website to find out when it was produced. Apparently this is beer you can cellar. It's never made it that long in my house, but I like the idea!
I can't remember the name of the place but on my list to check out is a gourmet shop dedicated to exotic salts. Thought I'd mention it if you'd be interested in looking it up... (Update: Found it! See the link...)
I'm also curious to check out a restaurant called Beast. I've heard good things but haven't been yet. If I recall correctly they have one seating a night or something like that. Check their website.
