Any Washingtonians here?

Not a lot of options

Hi Richard. I've was a lurker at Gail's for longer than I care to remember, and only just found this place about a week ago. Would never miss the opportunity to help out someone coming to DC.

I work across the street from Union Station and a few blocks from the Capitol. You don't have too many great options for a business dinner (or any dinner for that matter), but here are some options.

Charlie Palmer's Steak House. I haven't been there, but hear pretty good things about it. They actually present their wine list on an iBook! Probably your best chance to spot some politicos.

Bisto Bis in the Hotel George. Not as good as it it once was, IMO, but still quite good and very lovely.

B. Smiths in Union Station. Upscale Southern cuisine. Food is not great, but the setting is gorgeous.

And depending on when you are visiting, Johnny's Half Shell will be relocating from Dupont Circle to Capitol Hill (site formerly occupied by La Colline) sometime in late July. Date is not set yet, but that's what they're shooting for. In the spirit of full disclosure, I am good friends with the owner but will strongly endorse this excellent restaurant.

That's pretty much it for that area, that I can recall. Good luck!

We're going in mid-July so let me know...

what you find. Hubby is planning the trip but I am 'replanning' it around food. Starting in Baltimore, going to Poolesville to visit with his sister, drop 14 year old daughter off at Uof M in College Park, into DC to stay with friends, down to Vienna to go to dinner with clients. Then to Charlottesville to see Monticello and a cousin. Then to Williamsburg. Up to the Easton (or was it Eaton) to to eat crabs. Then to Atlantic City. Back through Philly. Into Baltimore. Pick daughter back up in College Park and fly home. Whew! But any recommendations on food are welcome now that we have more of our route planned out. Still looking at hotels and such too.

Well, if you're planning around food and

you're going to be in Charlottesville...go the extra 25 miles or so to Staunton to eat at Mrs. Rowe's (http://www.mrsrowes.com/). I've never been, but it's been on my radar for at least 10 years. Never get quite near enough when I'm out that way and I didn't know about it when I drove through on my way to Monticello awhile back. But I've heard absolute raves about this place. If you go, let me know what you think. And if at all possible...Monticello in July? Be there when the gates open.

Oh, and if you stop at the tourist office in Charlottesville and ask about places to buy Virginia ham, and a pert lady insults you by saying (in a condescending patrician Tidewater accent) "why asking for Virginia ham is like asking for wet water!" (surely a WELL practiced line)...would you smack her for me? I was too stunned at her rudeness to react when she said this to me.

I'm sure you are familiar with them but several sites I use to research restaurants...

www.dine.com
www.chowhound.com
www.tripadvisor.com
www.roadfood.com and like Denise, I sometimes use the City Search for the city.
