Anyone have this problem? My palate has completely changed....

I try dishes that were favorites just a few years ago...and now I wonder why I liked them so much. I hesitate to say I love something from the past...'cause I can't be completely sure I still do. (God help me if I've lost my taste for Chicago Style pizza!)

But seriously, I've gone through a serious gourmand exposure over the last couple years...and I hate to think I'm a food snob, but I've become really fussy about certain things. (Bread, cheese, etc.)

I'm not sure if I'm explaining myself very well here...but I've got a jar of Miracle Whip in the fridge that just seems gross to me now. LOL!

I just cleaned the fridge and threw out all sorts of stuff....

that I no longer consider good enough or wondered why I liked and bought them to start with. So I can completely understand.

By all means, be fussy about bread and cheese, but don't throw away the old stuff.

You'll get a craving eventually. Some, but not all, of the dishes you loved will resurface as favorites. Things go in cycles.

On 4th of July, I attended a block party where it's always potluck, plus they sell hot dogs. I brought a huge platter of Deviled Eggs, which were literally gone in five minutes (my friends who live on the block never got a taste), and the hot dogs were sold out by the time I got to them. Gawd I wanted a hot dog!

I remeber a WWII newsreel of Rita Hayworth after a USO tour, saying "I can't wait to bite into a real American Hot Dog!" After many trips to Europe, I know how she felt.

I would say my deviled eggs are a tad more sophisticated than my grandmother's, (they're not overboiled, to start with) but not by much, and we all need to return to our roots from time to time. I don't "get" Miracle Whip but lots of the Midwestern gourmets on this site swear by it. So don't throw it out!

Lol, I was raised on Miracle Whip, but I don't care for it now. Too sweet for me. Jello salads are

a different matter entirely. I've been sorting and organizing side dish recipes and couldn't bear to throw away 5 of my favorites from the past, even though I'll probably never make them again. As I go through old recipes, I too, can understand what Traca means. There are many we loved a few decades ago that really don't suit our tastes now. Many of the old favorites have been updated with lighter, simpler and sometimes fresh (rather than canned), ingredients.

That sounds right, Curious. I think we just replace tastes? Newer versions can be nice!!

LOL. I was brought up on Miracle Whip, not mayo. My husband

swears he does not like it. Granted, he does not like it plain, but I don't think he realizes how much he actually eats it!
Like Joe, I bring the much underrated deviled eggs to any gathering that involves the grill and they are scarfed within the first 20 minutes. My secret ingredient? Miracle whip! One could not tell,as it is mixed with many other ingredients, but I tried the recipe with mayo, and it was not as good.

So, IMHO, don't throw away the MW.

It almost scared me the first time I by-passed the dessert section of a cookbook and went

straight to salads and soups. Then fish.

And I SWEAR Igor swapped my brain with Abby Normal's when--seeing a multi-layer pie--a thought bubble appeared over my head with the words: Wow--that looks so sweet, my teeth hurt.

Who is this person and what have you done with the real Marilyn?

I believe we have all been lucky enough to go through this gourmand exposure

The world has become so much smaller thanks largely to the avaiability of all these wonderful foods.....

I've been through phases of likes first it was soups, potatoe being the fav one I made ...in senior school years ....oh and Mac 'n Cheese Ohh Yumm,
Cakes and all things dessert when first married,
then the Chinese stage (became very proficient there)
then Indian curries but now
Thai ursurps the Indian tastes by far. (lots of fresh Thai ingredients now available)
Novelle cuisine (French),
Brazilian and orange palm oil once was what I wanted at every meal then
Caribbean....
anything that is different is more on the list of what I want to make and eat.

I think that different is FRESH, (fresh from the garden especially)... there is such an abundance of new fresh foods hitting the supermarkets these days and I hanker after all things Mediterranean and Middle Eastern now...Oh and Canadian..... fresh salmon and maple syrup are very new flavours for my old taste buds and arugula and macadamia nuts.....and I can try out all these recipes from lands afar because all the ingredients are there for me at the shops.

Old style pizza, oh no!!!French thin crust with fresh ingredients, now that is pizza these days.

My husband just wants Sushimi for breakfast lunch and supper, 5 years ago he was happy with cottage pie at every meal if possible......he has progressed (finaly) from nursery cuisine to the exotic

The real stuff not the suedo stuff not MW, Aunt Jemima's, fat free cheeses, real crab not the white crab sticks etc

I think Nan is right replacing tastes is what it amounts to and Joe is right in that we do revisit the old tastes now and then even if it is just re-reading the recipes, nostalgia!

Great post joanie, now think I'll have an early lunch, you made me hungry, but what to have??

I always love your movie references Marilyn, but I can't give up on the Schwartzwalder KirschtorteBG

'kay, so what did you have for lunch? I get a bit like that too and just end up having...

a fresh egg from my chicks, usually scrambled with some herbs and tom-toes from the garden. (I only grow the wee cherry variety here)

well, this is one I am getting tired of, but am on the iron building diet---

some mixed greens, cukes, tomatoes, vinegrette with a can of smoked clams on top. And a glass of Geissen Sauv Blanc.

The clams have 100% of the iron one needs for the day. I don't like the supplements, so I have this salad every other day and take the pill on the other days. My iron stores were up after five weeks of this. Also get in some eggs and other iron rich foods. Been having a bucket of steamed clams or dozen oysters downtown once a week.
I prefer this thread to the kitty one!!
Nan

Raisins and dried apricots have lots of iron...

try adding those to your snack pack, and you might be able to further reduce the supplements.

Thanks Judy, you know I knew that, and have some, had been so calorie conscientious since getting

off crutches and getting back to full workout schedule; now can actually have treats and healthy treats are best!!
I love dried apricots.

Once I am back to work, can pretty much eat what I please. Can not wait, have been waiting on documents which were being renewed, Found this morning they are almost ready to be mailed!! Was supposed to go to work on the 15th and was going to have to turn it down, but has been moved up to 24th.

Thanks again,
Nan

So do I, LOLLLL!.......

We eat about as many eggs as one can as I have them fresh, so good. I love clams and I think that our diet must be very rich in iron.
I'm solid enough to be called an 'iron bar' these days.
Oh, well perhaps it was the 'iron maiden'...(in reference to my verbal annoyance at the cat loosing her outside climbing bar)

Joanie...well said. I haven't been on this culinary journey long, but I can already see

my changing allegiances to various cuisines. I was a big fan of Chinese..then moved on to Thai, and now my favorite is Vietnamese. I've got one eye on Middle Eastern next...

But as for changing tastes...and example. Someone had a bag of Hershey's Kisses at the office and in a late afternoon munch, I had one. I hate to say this, but I nearly spit it out! I didn't...and afterwards, thought to myself, what a horrible waste of calories. Clearly, not all chocolate is created the same. smileys/smile.gif
