Hi deb. Moi lives in Bradenton and there are plenty of good restaurants in this region.
In Sarasota, Crab & Fin is a highly touted seafood restaurant that's located in St. Armand's Circle. I have not eaten there, but have heard a lot of people rave about it. Just stay away from the food at Columbia Restaurant on the Circle unless you just want to have drinks... It's an over-rated tourist trap.
For ambiance, Marina Jack's on Sarasota Bay (at Image Link). Have not eaten there, but had a drink on the outdoor patio whilst doggie was getting groomed. I have walked the surrounding marina/park many times and there's also a nice casual waterfront restaurant on the bay within walking distance of Marina Jack's called O'Leary's

Other notable restaurants in the Sarasota/Bradenton area are:

http://www.thewaterfrontrestaurant.net/ Anna Maria Island and I just love their food
http://www.beachbistro.com/ Very pricey but one of the finest restaurants in Florida. I have not eaten there yet..... smileys/wink.gif
http://pier22dining.com/ (where Sandra/New York and I had lunch a couple of weeks ago)
http://www.phocalisarasota.com/ (I've had lunch here and it's a very popular place with plenty of good food for the money).
http://www.swordfishgrillcortez.com/ One of my favorite local restaurants with a great location
http://www.groupersandwich.com/ (Beach House Restaurant - right on the Gulf. I also love this restaurant!).
Geez, I could probably come up with more, but like I said, these are the notable ones.
Enjoy your stay down here!
Sandy
