Anyone know...what happened to the domestic asparagus crop this year? I usually see

fresh asparagus this time of year, probably from the northwest/California in stores at great prices. This year, except for one time, the featured asparagus has been imported. Anyone know if there is a problem or doesn't it get as far as Florida?

I was wondering the same thing. We usually get it in the stores around...

Eastertime, but what IS here, is still very expensive. I thought I'd missed the peak season, but maybe it didn't come this year for some reason (?).

Anyone ever tried the white kind?

It was a month ago when the local crop was in the stores here.

The Mexico asparagus crop was available at the same time. I got 3 pounds of really nice, trimmed asparagus in Algodones for a dollar.

There are still a few spears in the frig. from the lb. that I pickled. The rest I roasted and buttered.

WOW! Isn't Victoria Island brand from Washington?? It's the best..

oh wait...you're writing from Hawaii - I forgot! Ha! I was thinking you were a mainlander there for a minute. Anyway, yes asparagus is still expensive and I also wondered why. My Washington State asparagus is still $3.99 when it should be $.99 to $1.99 a pound.

One problem is the glut of year-round imported asparagus

Up here in Canada anyway, where just a few years ago asparagus was still a springtime treat. Now you can get it year-round from Peru and Mexico (even though it's as tasteless as year-round strawberries and year-round rhubarb) a lot of Ontario farmers don't have the market they used to and switch to other products. I guess a lot of consumers don't care too much about the taste of what they eat, or its provenance, or the benefits of eating local food. (Don't get me preachin' ...!)

To be honest, the prices have been so high, that I haven't taken notice, but I will, this week. NT
