I must be insane - but we are flying in to Chicago, renting a minivan, and driving Route 66 from beginning to end!

Please PM or e-mail me if you'd like to meet up along the way....

Not along 66, but would love to hear about your experience!! Sounds like fun! I have always

wanted to do this!! I am sure it will be a wonderful experience for your children. Please keep us posted! Would love to hear your insights/thoughts on cross country vacations!

Regards,
Barb

Thanks barb! I'm really starting to wonder if it is such a wise idea -

seeing as baby will be 8 months old and is really not liking the car seat so much, unlike her older brother did. smileys/smile.gif

I am thinking of doing a blog while on the road to keep in touch with family and friends. If I do, I will send you a link.

Wish us luck!

Lisa, this sounds like memories in the making. Even if your baby gives you a little trouble,

it will be worth it.

Will you be sticking to what's left of the old non-freeway road? Please share the blog with all of us.

I have family in Chicago, and I assume I don't have to warn you about the heat. I spent a few wonderful but sweltering summer vacations there as a kid.

I've always meant to make up a tape of the many different versions of the song "Route 66," starting with Nat King Cole, and moving on to the Rolling Stones, the Manhatten Transfer, and others. I may never get around to it; perhaps it's something you could put together for your trip? (in your spare time, LOL).

I'm wondering if I could encourage a few Arizona swappers to meet in Flagstaff? Or wherever????

I'll meet Lisa and anyone else who wants to go!

Michael

The heat....(sob). I'm already having nightmares about it! And who knew..

so many people covered Route 66? iTunes has 150 versions of the song available for purchase. We already have the Chuck Berry, John Mayer, and Cheetah Girls versions, but I'm going to have to add some Rolling Stones, Buckwheat Zydeco, Depeche Mode, and Nancy Sinatra in there somewhere!

Not to mention the Al Jarreau version where he mistakenly says "Only 3,000 miles all the way...." My son thought *that* was endlessly amusing, and sang it off and on all day yesterday.

Now *that's* an idea! I will keep in touch with you, and when we have a firmer idea of when

we will be passing through Flagstaff, we could coordinate something. We have most of the trip mapped out, but are building in a two night stop somewhere along the line so Mama can catch her breath, do laundry, etc.

Oh you're so far ahead of me! I stopped counting long before Depeche Mode existed.

It's the mark of a great song that so many diverse talents can interpret it. I do love the
Stones' version, and I'm not even a big Stones fan.

Once, we had arrived in Paris, totally jetlagged and exhausted and looking forward to an early night, but Jacques' friends insisted on taking us out for a "quick" drink. It lasted for hours, and after several venues we ended up in some dank left-bank basement listening to an American jazz band. They announced their final number (finally!) It was "Route 66" and it went on forever. It even had a 20-minute drum solo. Jacques' friends meant well, but since then I always make sure I have cab fare with me. It still didn't ruin the song for me, though. And in retrospect, I suppose I remember the jazz club experience better than the hotel bed I was craving the whole time.

Why Not Phoenix? Or close proximaty? I would definately go!! smileys/smile.gif

Hi dianne, I doubt I can convince my family to add an additional

300 mile side trip to the 2,200 we will already be driving, otherwise I would. smileys/smile.gif

Ah, Paris! I can just picture the scene - I have very fond memories of my one and only trip

there (so far, anyway). I think I may have mentioned it before, but we have all of this great video footage of the trip, and at least 50% of it is shots of nearly every meal and snack, going around the table with each person doing "show and tell" of their meal. It is a riot!

Why does everything taste so great there? I asked the chef in a small bistro about the ethereal mashed potatoes - what was in them? He responded with the usual - butter, milk, salt. We discussed the differences in tastes, and he said something about "It is all the the soil" - and I have to think that is true. Things aren't farmed the same way they are here, and it really makes a difference in the quality of all of the food.

Please Lisa, lie down till the feeling for this trip passes!! My view of holidays

is still warped by those endless trips between NJ and CT and MA and Ct in the fifties and sixties! And we didn't have to use car seats!

LOL. Oh those road trips without car seats! I remember. Us kids bouncing around, climbing over

seats, getting in each other's hair. Getting car sick. Happy Days. I watched Terms of Endearment the other day, and they left for the midwest with the kid loose in the backseat. I forgot about those days when that was normal.
