Anyone making homemade yogurt? Is it economical, if you still have to buy some kind of starter?

I'm thinking about getting a homemade yogurt maker, but I see you still have to have some kind of starter - either ready-prepared yogurt, or a starter in dried form.

I've been trying some of the soy yogurts (Silk soy yogurt is way better than Nancy's soy yogurt), and am wondering if it would be more economical/practical to try making it with soy milk.

Or is it a fad thing that you've used a couple of times, then hid it way back in the closet....?

Just wondering. TIA!

I use mine sometimes, but

I cannot find an 8-oz carton of plain yogurt to use as a starter. Buying a full quart, means that I use 1/4 of a quart to make a quart more of yogurt. Then I use some of this to mix with fruit and I turn the rest into yogurt cheese. I have never tried soy yogurt.

I think soon I am going to try making a quart starting with an 8-oz. pkg. of lemon yogurt containing live cultures.
