Anyone on the swap from San Diego? My friend Crescent is teaching a writing workshop

I grew up there... wish I was going to be in town that weekend!

I like how they say it's "near the ocean", when actually it's 15 miles away! What a cute place to stay... let us know all about your trip and post some pics! Have a great time with your friend.

I grew up there as well. Those old neighborhoods near downtown have seen a...

...huge resurgence since I left 25 years ago. Those old homes have been re-done and look great!

Yeah, those realtors/property managers feel like everything in San Diego is "near the ocean". Well, it IS a coastal town, right?

Have fun Traca. We'll all be there the first and second week of June for a little vacation. Can't wait!

Michael

I know! I saw it was a 10 minute drive and my friend Cres thought it was 2 blocks away. I think we

need a car. What do you think?

I should map it...it sounds like this house is further away from the beach than she anticipated.

It's so cute, we'll still stay there but the question is, to rent a car or not. I vote for the car but you may know the area better. What do you think?

Definitely rent a car. So Cal is "geared" around car travel, and most estimates...

assume you will be driving.

"10 minutes" at 70 MPH on the freeway is 11 1/2 miles!

We spent a week in San Diego several years ago, and had a rental car the whole time. Used it...

constantly. It's a very car-friendly area, and easy to drive around and explore.

Thanks Marianne. That's helpful. My friend is resisting on the car front but

hopefully I can get her to turn a corner on that one. I've never been to SD and would really like to see more of the area during the short time I'm there.

Traca, did you get a good quote on car rental prices?? Southwest has good rates...

plus, if you want to check other rates, PM me smileys/smile.gif

Yes, I live here! You do need a car for sure.

Actually, I live a bit inland in La Mesa.
Sorry to get to this so belatedly. My son and his girlfriend live in Hillcrest. It's great for dining out and walking around. It's not far to Balboa Park. He usually goes to work there on his bicycle.
To get to any of the beaches, you need a car. (BTW, does this house have decent parking? Hillcrest is notoriously crowded, and always hard to park.) If you have an address, send a private message and I'll try to tell you more. I am confused, though, about the mention of Kensington. K is out toward SDSU, and north of El Cajon Blvd., a very separate neighborhood.

Anna, here's a link to the house. Comments say there's a farmer's market nearby.

I think my friend was intrigued by the nearby ocean and orginally thought it was 2 blocks away. LOL! It seems it's about 15 miles away...Any comments you have would be greatly appreciated. I've never been to this part of the country and our time will be limited.

Resign yourselves. You aren't anywhere near the beaches.

___And you're not quite in Hillcrest either but you can be there in minutes. You are in a good area to drive easily to Balboa Park (zoo and museums), out to funky Ocean Beach in 15 minutes by freeway, Point Loma Lighthouse for whalewatching, or a bit longer (plus traffic) to pretty La Jolla. I hope you will have an extra day or two to play tourist. Has your friend ever been here before?
____Your area of University Heights is full of older renovated houses with a lot of charm. There are plenty of cute neighborhood restaurants nearby, although the kitchen sounds great, if you choose to cook there. I'd consider Uhinversity Hts a nice area to visit, because I like to walk around older neighborhoods. There is a farmer's market on the edge of Hillcrest, in the DMV parking lot. I'll check to see if there is one in UH as well and get back to you with days and times.

___We're going to Hillcrest tonight to celebrate my kid's birthday. I'll try to talk my husband into detouring through University Hts to get a better feel for your location.
