Anyone see the Dateline topic "How safe is your grocery store?" last night? >>

I'm amused at the birds flying around because I saw that on Saturday at my local Publix which, btw, is said to be the highest volume Publix in Sarasota. The list of violations per inspections was surprising to me, somehow I would have expected the ones at the bottom to be at the top! I've linked the article from their web site.http://msnbc.msn.com/id/10976595/

I didn't catch the show, but I've heard allllll about the stores, etc.>>

I have a theory that goes like this: If you were to inspect every grocery, or restaurant that you patronize, you'd probably NEVER EVER shop or dine there again.
When I see flagrant abuse of certain important rules, ie.. a particular Winn Dixie store used to change the "sell by" labels to conform to the date it was. I reported this to the manager, and, then, when I wasn't satisfied with their compliance, I called someone at the Dept of Agriculture. (Can't remember where, it was some years ago!).... But I know, now, when the torn off label appears under a fresh new label..... my back goes up, and I leave the store. (That's ANY store, not just the WD.)
Curious, I see birds flying around my Publix ALL the time. Hmmmm, I never thought about bird droppings. It really is disgusting to have to be aware of all these things.
One thing, I've been doing, for years, is wiping around EVERY can, bottle and box or container that goes into my pantry, as it comes into the house, from the market, irregardless of which market, etc.
I guess we can only do what we can do, and hope for the best!

EEEWWW! Thank God for stomach acid. There's an Albertson's near me >>

that I avoid for all kinds of reasons (20-minute lines, stupid employees, etc.) and now I have yet another.

By the way, I read an interesting factoid in a waiting room: Refrigeration has saved more lives than surgery. (I think it was National Geographic.)

I know there are certain stores where I won't buy anything from the deli or fish market. I think it

depends more on the individual store than the chain as a whole. Publix has a great rep in Florida and surely must be number 1 here, but some of their stores are pretty lax. In one, they had the packaged frozen fish in a case that wasn't maintaining the proper temperature and it was actually thawing. I pointed it out to the person behind the seafood counter and he just shrugged and made a remark that they were having trouble with it. I think they were just shifting the thawing ones to the bottom. Not a nice thought. Even if they were safe the quality was compromised.

Prepared food and restaurant food...Now this is one of the things I try not to think about!

I do try to remember to wipe off a can before I open it.
