Anyone there? Anybody who can tell me the composition of apple butter that would go into Cyn's

breakfast bars?

I have never bought it and don't have it on hand. I can see recipes on how to make it but am not sure if this would be quite the same as what is jarred commercially.

But I do have a jar of Trader Joe's "mango sauce". I"m going ahead with the bars at double quantity. The sauce looks a little thinner than what I might expect from 'apple butter' and it has considerable sugar in it.

I'll put this aside for half an hour or so, if anyone can tell me about apple butter. Thanks.

Apple butter should be apples and cinnamon,

sometimes cider is added, but that is it. No sugar or other ingredients. Just apples cooked into a thick, dark brown paste.

I was stunned...let me repeat...stunned to realize I could

just take my homemade cinnamony applesauce, push it through a sieve, add some cloves, ginger and a bit of apple cider vinegar and WA-LA! I had--to my taste--apple butter.

Somehow I thought a 40-quart solid copper kettle stirred for 3 weeks over a wood-burning stove by a mail-order bride was required.

You also might be able to boil down your applesauce first to reduce/thicken it up.

I'm gonna get me some apple butter. Just took them out of the oven. I tried to thicken

the mango sauce on the stove but got impatient. I didn't have much hope for thickening anyway. I added butter to the hot sauce in hopes that if I keep these guys chilled, they might hang together. I've cut off a chunk and refrigerated it to see if this works. (the only thing I miss about winter again, is the outdoor frig for whatever size vessel or baking sheet)

The mango sauce has sugar in it but at least it's the second ingredient.

No, it's thicker than that. It's spoonable...

and of course the thickness varies. I've had homemade versions so thick you could almost cut it into squares, but that's too thick.

Maybe the texture of a light buttercream? Which would make sense why it works as a fat sub.

Marg, you should be able to find apple butter by the jams and jellies in the store.

And I hear ya about missing the winter "fridge" out on the back deck, or BBQ. LOL.

Hi Richard! I've really never seen an apple butter recipe, either commercially made or

homemade, without sugar. It's usually pretty sweet. I don't know if it's different in other parts of the country, though.
