Anyone use delayed on/off with your oven?

I don't even know if the new ovens still do this...but I've always been afraid to use it. I mean has anyone say put a chicken in the oven in the am and set it to roast by the time you get home?

Seems like a long time without being in the fridge and what about heating up time? BUT it would sure come in handy making dinner for guests wed night after work...any one use these settings and have lived to tell the tale?

I'm askerred!

I have used my oven timer lots of times. When I was working, I would put the partially frozen

chicken/roast or whatever into the oven, all prepped and ready to go. Set timer to come on, cook, go off and keep warm. Worked like a charm. Of course, one of the kids was always around and knew what was going on. These days, when I have a really busy day, I prefer the Crockpot.

LOL, poison dinner guests! I'm reading Ruth Reichl's Tender at the Bone and her Mom did this quite

regularly. But not with delayed start. If your dish is good and cold to start with, I think it would be just fine.

I would be warry if you were gone an entire work day. If chicken sits in the oven for over 4 hours

before the oven comes on, there could be trouble. If you were only gone for the afternoon it would be fine.

The heating up time isn't such an issue because the surface of the chicken is the issue, and it would heat up quickly.

There aren't any safety issues with keeping food in a warm (170*) oven, but the quality might suffer after a while.

Thanks all -- I'm still askerred enough to just say no! smileys/smile.gif
