Anything fun going on this weekend?

Please, amuse me... smileys/smile.gif

Well, we will have a dinner "party" here - just one couple, our first entertaining for people from Manhattan.

I am making a Brazilian dish, shrimp moqueca, rice, a salad with hearts of palm, and a little nibble before, "mandioca frita" - in case you are curious, I include a link (forgive the auto-promotion, it's from my blog smileys/wink.gif

http://bewitchingkitchen.com/2010/01/17/mandioca-frita-101-fried-yucca-root/

dessert will be just a sorbet, store bought. Phil will be in charge of appetizers and "caipirinhas", the Brazilian national drink.

now, of course that can all change if we get covered with snow again, but apparently the weekend will be ok.

I envy your guests!

My brother requested spaghetti and meat sauce like Mom used to make for dinner on Sunday. I did buy dried pasta but refuse to buy jarred sauce!

While I was checking out my canned tomato inventory prior to shopping I noticed that the imported whole tomatoes I bought at the Italian market in Dallas don't have an expiration date on them. I guess I had better start using them. I hope my brother finds my sauce as tasty as my mother's jarred Ragu with some extra dried oregano, dried basil, and a bit of sugar.

BTW - Norman is getting a Sprouts (formerly Sunflower).

That sounds so fun! Nothing like fun food and drink during the dead of winter. I'm going to a crab

party / breakfast at the Wharf and then to the Russian festival.. It's going to be a noshy day! Sunday is a yarn and fiber giant convention and a bunch of my crafty friends are meeting to explore and then go eat ramen after. I'm trying to figure out how many layers I'll need since it's cold here - for us Californians - at 39 in the morning to 58. Brrr! All you folk who live with real weather you may throw a snowball at me.

I'm so looking forward to our last big family get together bash at my grandparent's house

after Grandad's memorial service today. Catered barbecue. This place has the greatest ribs. Very bittersweet because it will probably be the last time I see some of my mom's extended family.

Do you have a favorite ramen restaurant?

I'll be in the area soon and am deciding where I will be eating.

Sally, I recently discovered a small mom and pop restaurant; I believe they are from Paraguay.

food. There is usually one pork dish, one beef dish and one chicken dish on the menu. (Until they run out for the day, usually around 2:00).

All the dishes are served with white rice and beans, as well as "yuca frita" It looks very similar to your blog. They only have 3 tables; majority of their business is targeted towards local construction workers and take out (and cash only). They always add this wonderful garlic sauce in the bag that I "Think" I am supposed to add to the yuca. Oh, and they have the best empandas! Just love that place.

Always makes me laugh, because they just assume that I am in the wrong restaurant. They immediately start giving me directions to the pizzeria next door.

You blog has made me hungry! Sounds like a lovely dinner party!

Yeap, same thing....

.... we don't do the garlic sauce, but I know it's done like that in other countries of South AmericaI

I can imagine how great the food tastes, I love these mom and pop places that are harder and harder to come by these days.

Another way to eat the yuca is simply cooked, exactly as I mentioned in the blog, but then, while it is still warm you drizzle melted butter, salt and pepper. Nothing else is needed. Heavenly

I love ramen! My favorite is Hapa Ramen, Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Ferry Building

farmers market. Ritchie is working on getting a restaurant but had another baby so he's a little delayed I think. There are so many ramen places here and I've tried most of them. I'm heading down the peninsula for ramen tomorrow night, Ramen Club!!

Oh Melissa, I hate those fun but bittersweet gatherings, I always cry when I drive away...

It's like you know it's a very special time and you're really having a great time but in the back of your mind just thinking about the sad part of it too. I envy you the barbecue ribs! I wish you could send some out here! I hope you enjoyed your day.

Thanks for posting the list.

I arrive late Thursday night and depart Monday afternoon. I'll choose one of the other places on the list and go Friday, Sunday or for lunch Monday.

Oscars, Oscars and how Chocolate PB Cookies became "Award Cookies" plus dates, b/c: yum! (pixs)

So the lazy gene hit and I didn't end up making the Oscar statue cookies, but turned the PB cookies in T&T into Award Cookies or Hollywood Walk of Fame...er...Stars Cookies, with the lazy idea of "I wonder if I made an impression on the cookies with a cutter - would it come through on the baked cookie?" Well, you be the judge:

My friend made a plate of dates stuffed with sharp cheddar, pecans, and rolled in powered sugar - delish!

Dates on a Plate!!! (shouted in my best Samuel L. Jackson impression)

Sorry the photos are somewhat over exposed, did this quick with a point/shoot on her kitchen table, but thought the cookies took an impression well, so could be themed easily for any occasion. And you just can't go wrong with those cookies - everyone loved them and asked for the recipe.
