Are frozen sardines as good as fresh?

I'm having trouble (in Canada's biggest city, no surprise) finding fresh sardines, and buying frozen may be easier. But I've also heard that frozen sardines do not compare to fresh and many people won't use them. Is this true? Do any of you fry or grill thawed frozen sardines and not notice any difference?

 
No shortage, but no demand downtown. The Portuguese wholesalers are a bit too far for

non-driver me. But luckily I found fresh, meaty beauties at Pisces downtown (priced at line-of-credit level), just in that morning.

Several fishmongers I phoned before that did agree that frozen can be "stronger" tasting, though. Not sure why that would be.
