The March/April CI has a in-depth article on tasting canned whole tomatoes-

the subtitle is "Italian imports don't measure up"

Remembering our conversation here earlier about canned San Marzano varieties- here are the CI recommended brands

#1 Muir Glen Organic whole peeled tomatoes

#2 Hunt's whole plum tomatoes

Try Trader Joe's. They're fairly cheap--$1.50 or so--and I think they are as good as any.

I noticed that the Italian SM was not DOP which means that...

it was SM type tomatoes, but not necessarily from the DOP region around Naples.

I don't always agree with CI's findings--they prefer Ronzoni to much better products like DeCecco.

They didn't like Bionaturae witch I've never tried (love their pastas)

I like Muir Glen, but find it hit or miss. Tomatoes are indeed seasonal and I find that they can be underripe.

I really like
Sienese brand DOP. They are a bit expensive (about $3.79 a can), but a can can of tomatoes can make enough sauce for at least 6.
