As I mentioned before, it's been a hard year. I'd like to make some sort of poppy seed

something for my mom. She absolutely adores poppy seed! I don't bake much, so I thought maybe a nice poppy seed quick bread would be nice... she'd probably like to slice and toast it. But all the recipes seem to call for almond extract (yuck) or lemon. I think she'd prefer just a really rich poppy seed flavor, not citrusy.

Or I could make some sort of poppy seed cookie?

I don't know. I really don't like to bake much at all. What do you think? And recommended recipes?

She likes coconut too... do poppy seed and coconut go together? Could I add poppy seed to the

pound cake Meryl just posted above me?

dh actually doesn't like poppy seeds, but they are prevalent in alot of hungarian rec's. The one

that I have seen many times served at family gatherings is a poppy roll. Have a dough, spread the poppy seed filling, roll up and bake. I have never made it, but I see it often at family events. Let me see if I can find a rec from MIL.

What a nice surprise for your mom! I am sure whatever you make will put a smile on her face. Very considerate, thoughtful and special that you are both helping each other through this difficult time.

Poppyseeds go well with lemon - You could do a lemon/poppyseed pound cake, quick bread, or muffins.

How about Martha Stewart's Cheese Straws? I often watch her cooking show on PBS

and saw this the night before last. I want to give them a whirl myself by buying puff pastry sheets at a restaurant wholesale/retail store.

One day, I'd like to follow her "from scratch" recipe (as described in the show) for puff pastry. Many, many layers, but you just need a day ahead to prepare from what I've gathered.
