Australian Cuisine

My husband just announced that his team is having a "Continental Potluck" at work on Wednesday and he drew Australia. He needs to bring a side dish or dessert. Any thoughts? I am really struggling with this one.

Thanks.

Kathleen

Hopefully Sandra will see this, but until she does, here's a site I love. Ironically,

this is a great site to find recipes from Bon Appetit and Gourmet, so I guess they don't eat that much differently from us.

Thanks

I can't see a link. I am assuming it is epicurious.com. I have already been there. In fact, I found you all as I was a regular lurker and occasional poster at the old Gails for ever and ever.

If it wasn't a work thing, I would do an Australian wine tasting but I think that would be frowned upon.

Thanks.

I can't put my hand on the recipes I had but here are a couple of desserts

Lamingtons - basically cake dipped in chocolate glaze and rolled in coconut

ANZAC Bikkies - We really liked these, a version of oatmeal cookies that remind me a lot of the British Hob Nobs. Golden syrup is the Lyles Golden Syrup and I can find it in most groceries these days. If not, a good old fashioned golden syrup like Blackburn's (or is it Braeburn's) like my grandma used will work.

that and a couple of other sweets were all that came up on my favorite international site

Good advice Pat...

The food here is not that different, it's mostly the ingredient combinations...

Favourite ingredients here include pumpkin, sweet potatoes, macadamia nuts, and passionfruit, they put passionfruit in everything!

Pavlova is a good choice, top it with loads of whipped cream and kiwi, strawberries and passionfruit - although beware of the ongoing debate wether pav is aussie or kiwi!

Here is a good Australian recipe site

You'll see the food here is not that different

The March 2005 Saveur has a feature article on Australian bakeries. Recipes include

Lamingtons (white cake iced and rolled in coconut), Beestings (sweet buns filled with custard and jam), and Vanilla Slice (puff pastry layers with layered fondant and custard).

None of them come up in the online search, but if you'd like any of the recipes, let me know.

There are also less strictly traditional desserts at the linked site.

Once again, thanks for the advice

...my additional challenge is that we are in the middle of a major kitchen remodel and I don't have a lot to work with appliance-wise. If I can find Passionfruit here in Minnesota, I might try some Pavlovas although the prospect of cooking meringues in my toaster oven is not appealing. Otherwise, I am going to search out some Australian cheese and do a simple cheese platter. Was hoping I could find some no-cook salad type idea.

Thanks again for all the ideas.

Kathleen

I had to nix the passionfruit when I was doing an AZ themed dessert because...

passionfruits were $4 each & I would have needed close to 20! I think I ended up subbing raspberry puree.
