Baking soda vs. baking powder - I have always wondered about difference...

Hi Jane. Welcome back. Here's a recipe I use to make my own baking powder. It...

...doesn't have all the aluminum stuff in it, and works just like the other stuff.

Technically it is a 'single acting' baking powder, but I've used it in all my recipes with no difference at all.

According to cheezz's link, it's... (thanks for the article!)

To make your own baking powder, "simply mix two parts cream of tartar with one part baking soda".

I've often wondered about what they explained here - thanks.

Thx, Michael....thought you were having a senior moment, but then you're too young....

But then, I began to have them in my mid forties....haha

I just wonder why it is necessary to make your own BP when it is so available?

I can understand if you have run out and need a sub but otherwise?

We used Michael's recipe one morning when we were waffle starved and BP dry...

We live a good 20 to 30 minutes from the nearest grocery store... so his method was a life saver. It's just not practical for us to go to town for one ingredient.

At the risk of being told that aluminum compounds...

...don't cause Alzheimers, I like the idea of not using those elements in a product I can easily make myself.

I bake a lot, and I appreciate the simplicity of using my own baking powder, knowing it is probably healthier than the stuff on most store shelves.

Michael, better safe than sorry...

And even though there are studies that claim there is no connection, there are still compelling arguments to the contrary.

I agree completely. I can't imagine that having aluminum compounds...

...in your body is GOOD for you, even though it may not lead to some high-profile disease.

I'm trying to keep our family table as clean as possible, and each little step I take moves me closer to my goal. Most of the time we eat healthy, nutritious meals, with the occasional splurge --usually something from this board!

It's just nice to be able to control some things...

when you aren't really sure or just because you can. I often make my own spice mixes to get the same flavor but cut down on salt or other 'filler' junk they put in them to make them more shelf stable, attractive, less clumping, etc....... but this is the first I have seen of that - we should start a substitutions/homemade section for things like this.
