I followed the recipe closely except that I used dried garbanzos because I had them on hand. I soaked them and boiled them in the usual way. I lamented the lost chicken broth and next time I think I would use less as Barbara suggested or use the bean broth, which would make the dish truly vegetarian.

It was supper by itself--very satisfying.

I saved the drained fennel-scented oil and made the best hummus with it and extra garbanzos. I still have some oil in the fridge and I'm using it here and there.

Yes, and they came out so creamy. But it would be a huge waste if you didn't save it.
